Hi,

I have been running cocktail for over a year about once a week without any problems (to clean cache, update prebinding, repair permissions).

Today I tried to run it and it just seems to hang, it has been on "Repairing disk permissions" for about an hour. This is my third try running it today and I have restarted my PowerBook twice. I am not having any other problems with my PowerBook at the moment.

Does anyone know what might be causing this? Thanks a lot.

If you're running Panther, and have updated to iTunes 6.0.2 this past week, it's likely to be due to a much-reported issue with the new iTunes package causing the Disk Management Tool to fail.

Big thread over on Apple Discussions site here.

Since the thread I linked to has a mixture of good and misguided advice, let me just add that the easiest workaround, until Apple fixes the iTunes package, is:

1) drag iTunes out of /Applications to your desktop
2) run Cocktail/Disk Utility/permissions repair app of your choice - should no longer hang
3) drag iTunes back into /Applications

Thanks! That seemed to work. Also on that thread, someone gave this suggeston:

Well, looks like a problem for older processors, mainly...
Anyway, check the previous messages for a full answer, or do this:

1) Go to HD>Library>Receipts and trash all iTunes .pkg files EXCEPT for iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg
2) Run Disk Utility (in my case from the Panther Start Up CD)
3) Restart and empty trash.
-----------------

That worked too! I am not very technical and I don't know about receipts, do you know why that works as well? Thanks again.
