I'm new to Cocoa/Objective-C programming, but have 6+ years experience in C/C++ programming, mostly in the embedded systems world. I'm looking for a good book to read about Cocoa to help me pick up the API quickly. I've read Aaron Hillgass' Cocoa Programming book, and did not find it as useful as I was hoping. He just doesn't go in depth enough for me. The book reminded me a lot of many OpenGL books I've read; lots of examples, just not enough depth to convince me I could code a useful application on my own.

Anyone have any suggestions for a book that targets the experienced programmer who needs to know details before he is comfortable with an API?

To be honest, I felt somewhat the same way after reading Hillegass's book. The way I fixed it is I picked an app I wanted to develop, and started developing it. I feel perfectly comfortable with Cocoa now. Admittedly there were things I missed and wheels I reinvented along the way, but that's all part of the learning process I think.

Heh, make that three. I thought it was a good introduction and still taught you a lot but it didn't explain things in depth. But I'd still recommend it for anyone that wants to learn Cocoa.

There really aren't any terribly in-depth Cocoa books that I'm aware of. It's best to learn by doing, in my opinion. Hillegass gives you enough to build a simple app, and you can learn from there.

I tend to agree with you all. I'm hoping a nice in-depth book comes out soon with updated information for Objective-C 2.0 and Xcode/Interface Builder 3.0.
