Some news from the OpenOffice.org Conference 2005:

There are currently two versions of OpenOffice available on Mac; the X11 version, which is up-to-date with the latest and is pretty fast and can read ODF. But it isn’t very Mac-like (as in, no drag-&-drop) and there are all sorts of font issues. Then there’s Neo/J, what I normally use, which is Mac-Like, except for it lags a couple of versions of Oo_O, and a couple of versions of Java, behind the mainstream, so doesn’t read ODF at the moment. Also it could be faster.

So the Mac porting team (Eric Bachard presenting) announced that they’ve decided to give up on X Windows (hey, that reminds me of why I switched to the Mac in the first place), bite the bullet, and do the thing right, in Cocoa. It’s gonna be a big tough job, but it’s worth doing.

I wonder if Apple cares and if they might be inclined to help? Oo_O isn’t really aimed at the same audience as Pages and Keynote, and it might be kind of nice to have one office suite that can read & write ODF.

Yes. I wonder too...

I wonder what they think about Apple's dropping of support for the Java-Cocoa bridge. This would seem to affect these sort of plans. Maybe they'll convince Apple to restart the project or at least release the source code.

Hope they continue it, I'm back on Open Office 2.0 running on X11, as I really didn't like NeoOfficeJ, just too buggy.

I think Apple will be quite reserved with support for OpenOffice (any flavour of it). We must not forget that MS Office is a very important application for the Mac. Not that I'd miss it on my machine but I think there is a big user base that demands MSO. Apple will certainly not upset MS by suddenly promoting this very capable alternative. This could jeopardize future development of MSO for the Mac and therefore the whole Mac platform.

If I was Apple I would give the OpenOffice team tons of backdoor development support, whilst at the same time continuing to pay lip service to M$ Office.. It can only benefit them to have a polished OpenOffice done in cocoa. They should help.

Amen to that. Open Office is a good program, but if Apple could help the get into Cocoa and improve the Mac experience that will only help. There have been a lot of news stories lately about various governments that are now dictating that their files be in a more universal foramt (like Open Office). Being able to run a Cocoa version may help to get more macs into those offices. At least I can dream that it could.

I love opensource apps, it will be great to have openoffice :D
