So, I was watching something on my computer in the morning as I was moisturizing with coconut oil. Long story short, I knocked over the container and spilled oil on the trackpad of my MacBook Pro (2021) and I'm fairly certain some got underneath it. Some may have also gotten under a couple of keys, but it's unlikely. I know! I'm stupid. At least I have AppleCare+ right?

Here's the thing: When I turn the computer on, the trackpad doesn't click all the way down, like the oil is stopping it, but when I use it, the trackpad starts to click down more easily. I'm worried that this means that the oil is heating up and may migrate. Is this possible? Is it dangerous?

I have a repair scheduled, but I'm waiting on the box to arrive. I really, really need to use my laptop for work, so not using it at all even for a couple days is a major hindrance to me. I'm just wondering if I should be careful about using the laptop at all, or if I can continue using it without much worry?

Thanks

The trackpad on the MacBook does not physically move. The sensation of moving is done by haptic feedback. I suspect your problem is more in the electronics than in any movement. AppleCare should cover the fix to the problem as it accidental damage.

Yep get it serviced under your liquid-damage coverage with AC+, that's why it's there.

Also - "I really, really need to use my laptop for work, so not using it at all even for a couple days is a major hindrance to me" - Clearly you need to do some emergency management planning. Perhaps look at this as an opportunity to get an "Alternate" computer. Maybe a Mac mini?

Next time bring a rag… or Kleenex… I also find using an external mouse when moisturizing with coconut oil while using my laptop helpful 😉
