COD 4 - Install Snow Leopard or Windows Version

I'm taking delivery of the new Core i7 iMac in November and am really keen to play Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare - I'll also be installing Windows 7. Question is - should I buy the Apple Mac version or Windows version of COD4? Are there any performance or other benefits of one over another?

Sorry for replying to my own post.

Reading more about COD4 and Snow Leopard I see there seems to be a possible performance issue since the Snow Leopard update - has this been resolved yet? Bearing this in mind would I be better to buy the PC version and run this in Boot Camp? Will the GFX quality and frame rate be just as good as if I was playing the OSX version? My "on Order" iMac will have the Quad Core i7 CPU, Radeon 4850 GPU and 8 Gigs of RAM.

Sorry for naive questions, the whole gaming thing on a MAC is completely new for me and appreciate any advise others can offer.

It's completely new for everybody, because gaming on the Mac is virtually non-existent -- OS X has never been, is not and in all likelihood will never be a gaming platform. People who play on a Mac actually play in Windows, effectively turning their Mac into a PC.

Anyway. As a rule of thumb you can safely say that

a) an OS X port of any PC game or Xbox game is buggy and slow when compared to the Windows and Xbox versions and

b) the OS X port still costs between 50 and 70 bucks while the Windows version is already on sale on the software pyramids or Steam for 5 to 10 bucks.

If you don't like Windows but still want to play: Buy an Xbox 360. It's the best thing that you can do. Especially Cod4 is great on the 360.

Thanks for your reply. So to get this straight in my head.

1. Running most games (in particular COD4) in the Windows partition of my iMac won't result in a degradation in quality of game play, in fact good chance they will work better than the OSX ported versions.

2. Another advantage of buying PC version is unit cost is going to be cheaper than OSX ported version.
 
COD4 (OS X) runs ok with occasional drops in FPS on my 13" MBP. I think its safe to say it'll run beautifully on an i7 with and ATI card.
 
COD4 should run sweetly on your iMac under OS X, not every port is slow and buggy and not every Mac user boots into Windows to game.
A console can be great for some people for certain types of games but there are many who far prefer a keyboard/mouse combo for shooters and RTS games suck on consoles.
 
Sure COD4 might run better in Windows, but as long as your running 60 FPS or over it's fine. Too bad there isn't a Mac demo to try it out. But the Windows version will get a better frame rate.
 
Love COD4 on my 13" MB! No bugs or issues for me.

I am a recent convert to the light, like you. I enjoy playing COD4 on my MB on a regular bases. I am upset that the new MW2 will not immediately be available on Mac and have seriously considered buying an Xbox to play it or even to buy the Win version. However I have decided to be steadfast in letting IW know of my unhappiness by waiting until the Mac version is available (I will play it at friends' consoles until such time).

I have read many threads about Apple not making a decent gaming machine, I find this to be false now and stand strong in my new convections.

everytime i try to join a group online it says key code in effect try logging on later. what does that mean and what do i have to do to play online?

this is like the second modern warfare thread i have seen you ask that question.. today. Are there any mods online? Buy the freaking game you noob. Or if you do pirate it, don't broadcast it to everyone with infantile questions like this. IF your smart enough to download and install a cracked game.. you should be smart enough to answer this question yourself. :eek:

Lol. He was trying to sound so innocent and it was blatantly obvious what was wrong.
 
I wouldn't assume he downloaded it.
There where some kids at our local Walmart that got caught opening the games and writing the keys down then taping them back up.

Get It

...for OSX Snow Leopard if you will be on it most of the time. I play CoD4 on my early 2009 iMac with Radeon 4850, 4 GB RAM, and 2.93 Ghz Core 2 Duo. It runs ~70 FPS at 1920x1200 with all settings on except soften smoke edges and AA. I have texture set to Automatic and no anisotropic filtering. The lowest my frames have gone on this system is ~50, with the highs easily into the 120s. I think you should get great FPS on your Core i7 system. The Mac port of CoD4 compares well to the Windows version; you only lose ~10-20 FPS at high settings. I'm in a gaming clan and have never had any serious FPS issues that keep me from competing/owning my fellow clan members. :) Also, the Radeon will kick CoD2's @$$.

COD4 on Snow leopard runs well in my opinion. I'm running it on an 07 Mac Pro with a 4870 at 1920x1200 and it runs like champ.

The only time it seems slow is if I've been playing for hours on a server with more than 25odd people and everyone decides they want to go crazy with airstrikes and smoke grenades. Then it can struggle a little.

But overall it's a far far better implementation of gameplay over trying to run TF2 in crossover.

you have to applaud the sheer tenacity with which people wish to pirate...I mean you're already getting the game for free...now they're actually depriving someone else who paid for the game...

This takes piracy to the next level. I still find it..a little shocking
