Well, Apple is sending me a replacement for my 2008 iMac with Nvidia 8800GS. Don't ask why lol, the story is too long to post here. :p I chose to pay $50 extra for the new(er) Radeon HD 4850. Has anyone played CoD4 or CoD2 on Snow Leopard with the HD 4850? I know CoD2 had some driver issues with my Nvidia 8800GS (I would only get ~40 FPS at low settings), so I'm hoping that will be resolved with this new GPU. As for CoD4, this should slay it, unless I encounter some of those purported memory leaks...
I'll be getting the new iMac in a week, so I'll post the GPU performance on those two games once I install them. Of course, if anyone HAS played them, please comment, as I don't want to get my hopes up TOO high. ;)

Haha, I'm really looking forward to it. Guess I'll have to wait to find out those benchmarks. If anyone is curious about CoD4/2 performance on this card with SL, stay tuned... :apple:

CoD2 Performance

Alrighty, here are the CoD2 benchmarks...

Max Settings, 4x Anti Aliasing, 1920x1200
100-180 FPS, avg. FPS 140

This was on the first mission in the CoD2 campaign mode. Online runs even better, but my iMac has capped the FPS to 91. I could lock them to something higher, but I don't see the point. :apple:

Best $50 you ever spent.

The 8800gs in the iMac is actually a mobile part (G92b), in reality its shader count and specs are closer to a desktop 9600 card. Nvidia has some extremely misleading naming conventions.

Your new 4850 is a big step up. Lucky guy!

Yes, it was a great deal. As far as I've learned, the 4850 in the iMac is the mobile variant--still a very powerful card.
My CoD4 performance with this card is actually about the same at higher settings with 1920x1200, but at the lower settings and 1920x1200 res, the 4850 outpaces with 8800GS, with ~110 FPS compared to the 8800's ~90. Makes me happy, since I prefer FPS around the 125 range. I really wanted the upgrade for better CoD2 performance, and I couldn't be happier. I'm getting a constant 125 FPS on CoD2 at 1920x1200 and stock settings. I'm now among the top players on the TWL clan's PAM PUG rifle's-only server I play on. :)
