CODES / RATINGS FOR 17mbp DISPLAYS PLS!

so... can we clarify the codes for and rate the different displays... whats good / bad..

for 17mbp are: 09C61 and 09C62.. r there any other codes? r these made by AU? [09c60 (AUO) and 09C57 (Chimei?) ]

is 09C56 a 15mbp display or 17mbp display ? this is made by samsung?

codes for manufacturers..?

r there any other numbers? i want to try work out whats good / what bad.. [mayb ratings & manufacturers for each code] .. then i can try speak to applecare and find out what is most recent, least problematic, how many different displays are available ,etc...

And this will gain you what? I seriously doubt that you can specify which manufacturer is used when you order your MBP. And where are you pulling these codes from?

not everyone orders their MBP's. some people have the luxury of going into an Apple store to see what screen code a MBP has before they buy it. there are a LOT of threads on here about the quality of the MBP screens and which manufacturer and screen codes tend to be better. i would presume the OP is asking so they can get a better idea of what the best ones are so they know what to look for when they go into an apple store.

I like this idea - a ratings table would be useful - I also have a suspicion that the Samsung displays would be superior overall and it would be great to find the codes for the 15 & 17 inch versions.

Yes you can actually pick and choose what you buy if you go about it the right way - with the current dreadful crop of LCD's you are well within your rights to be picky! It's either that or wait ages for the LED versions to appear - watch how they drop the RAM down to 1GB to offset the new display costs and keep the processors/graphics cards one step behind! Cynical, moi?

definitely worth bein picky!! i was thinkin jus moan enough to applcare an get them to send out th best display to an authorized appl dealer an then they can swop it over for me... easy...

i already had one replaced.. dont know what first one was [can i backtrack and find out?] but current is:

is much better but stil has same issues, ie darker on left side, especially top left corner an a almost pink blotch near left corner.. i know mayb i bein hyper critical but this not case with my pbk and is enough of an issuee for peopl to write on here!! as long as i dont hav to send it to appl im gonna keep changin it til it perfect .. remember these r PRO machines [but without a pro display]

display info is in display preferences, select color, then color lcd, then open profile, then scroll to 13

I actually don't think you can pick and choose when you go to the Apple Store. You can buy one, open it up and, if you're unhappy, maybe exchange for another one. But there's no way to tell what LCD a computer has without opening it up and checking. Similarly, Apple uses whole bezel replacements most of the time and they do not normally indicate what LCD is being used. I was being helped at the Apple Store and though they were doing everything possible to make me happy, they told me that they had to put the LCD on the computer to check the model and that there was no way to specify a specific LCD for replacement. They simply don't know.

Having said that, this is my brief summary of the LCDs discussed, and ones which I've personally seen over the last year:

15.4" " 09c60 AUO - the most common it seems. Main issues: very grainy, slight uneven backlighting, poor viewing angles. Did not like this display at all because of the above. I had several and they all gave me a headache and eye fatigue.

15.4" 09C57 - ChiMei (not 100%certain) - 2nd most common. Main issues: bright strip at the bottom of the screen, slight unevenness from left to right, grainy but better than 09c60, relatively poor viewing angles . I had two MBPs with this display and while they were a little better than the 09C60, they were still pretty poor. Didn't find it as objectionable as the 09c60 though, maybe because the grain was less.


15.4" 09C56 Samsung (haven't personally seen this one) - apparently less grain, even illumination and acceptable viewing angles. I'd like to see one to be true believer.


17" 09c 62 (LG-Philips) - Almost no grain, acceptable viewing angles, uneven illumination, bright strip at bottom (though I've had two now, one with a bright strip, the other not - in the store it's about 50/50). This displays is fine and, of all the MBPs I've had I like it the most because it's sharp, doesn't distort as easily, nice brightness and no grain. VERY easy on my eyes, comfortable to sit in front of for longer stretches. The only thing that would make it a genuinely *good* screen would be if the illumination would be more even. Still, it's not bad - just not great either.

17" 09C61 - don't know much about this one. Some say it's good, some say not.

Just curious, does a whole bezel replacement mean they basically remove the whole lid of the MBP (complete with the Airport antennas) and replace it with a new one to replace the screen?

i dont know how you guys come up with these codes in sys profiller i get 0x71c5 and its wicked apart from viewing angles and sometimes video looks a little pixelated well not that but u know just not sharp but no banding or grain here
