It reminds me of a few months back when someone was selling a limited edition Jimi Hendrix iPod for $10,000.

I personally would never buy stuff like this, but hey it's their money. I guess they can spend it on whatever they want. I just hope they don't have buyers remorse later on. :p

I was watching that too but if you think about it good boxed examples of the 5gb iPod sell for over £300 on ebay so if you can source a nice iPod for £50 with no box or accessories then you can make some quick money.

Well, thats the user "samsonbible" on ebay! He is not real...the hendrix ipod "only" costs 5000$ now...and the "quartet" could be yours for mere 89,950$ :rolleyes:

I don't think so...only a collector would spend real money on an old iPod in box, but then its important that the serial number on the box matches the serial number on the iPod ;)

Seriously watch a boxed iPod 5gb next time one comes up on ebay you will be surprised how much a boxed example sells for also no one ever asks if the serial numbers match on ebay.

Do you often sell these on Ebay? You seem to have some experience? I as a serious collector would NEVER pay the big bucks if they don't match! I always asks about the serial!

You talk as if I have no idea...I have been collecting for many years and I have put a lot of money into it. And I know whats important for me and many of my fellow collectors!

If people buy not matching iPods and boxes (and this is my opinion only) I call them opportunists, not real collectors. These are people who surely just wants to make some money. They buy what they think a collector would buy and hope to sell it again with a profit! They sell it to another opportunists and the snowball is rolling...still no REAL collector would buy this! :rolleyes:

I don't sell them unfortunately I just watch them go through (in the hope that it stays at 99p) I don't have the spare change just for a old iPod 5gb in box although I would love one it would go great with the iMac G4 17 1.25Ghz inch I just got from ebay. I never seen one with a description or question saying about the serial numbers and if they match or not and this is why I don't think many people think about that. Im sure you know there are some really stupid e-bayers out there. Yes I totally agree with your last statement if I was going to fork out money on one I would want the serial to match. But anyway keep watching ebay boxed iPods are not as rare as some think there is at least one on every month or so.

Would you buy this? The seller provided us with the serial which tells us its a refurbished iPod from march 2004. Is it first gen? Is it rare? is it sealed? :rolleyes:

Personally I never really care for buy it now there normally always over priced. I couldn't find anything on that serial how did you find out that its a referb, I guess its just a sealed referb but this would explain why no box due to referb stuff from apple coming in referb packaging.

The serial is "GQ3410GBNAM". GQ on an old iPod is ALWAYS a refurb. And its "produced" October (week 41) 2003 as number 555! (I misread the numbers in my previous post ;) )

The first gen iPod was produced 23 October 2001 to 21 March 2002. So a productiondate 2003 is not possible for a first generation iPod ;)
 
old apple stuff goes for crazy money sometimes. maybe i should sell my 1st gen nano box, seeing as apple sent me some horrible touch nano instead.. i joke. thats a ridiculous attitude. although that ebayer was stupid, in all honesty.
 
There was some guy selling a "new" 8GB iPod Nano in box but the box was opened to display the iPod in the ad. He was asking $130 for it. I emailed him telling him that the 16GB was $129 at BestBuy. A few hours later the price was lowered to $90. I have no clue why he thought he was going to get $130 for a 8GB Nano. They are hardly rare and easy to find. There are several 8GB Nanos on CL everyday, it's the 16GB that are harder to find on there.

This is what I think! ;)

There are lots of people buying and selling iPods that are not "real" collectors. I call them opportunists! These are people who surely just wants to make easy money. They buy what they think a collector would buy and hope to sell it again with a profit! They sell it to another opportunists and the snowball is rolling...after a couple of times on ebay, the iPod is suddenly "worth" a fortune!

Other naive "do-not-have-a-clue" ebayers also see these insane auctions and think they could get plenty of $$$ for their banged-up, box-missing, no-good, scruffy-looking iPods :rolleyes: Soon enough a 5:th gen iPod is worth more money than when it was new :eek:

Still, an iPod is worth, what someone is willing to pay...I know!
But honestly...the guy selling four sealed old iPods for 90k on ebay?? Whats wrong with that dude? 90,000$...
My fear is that some crazy bastard with loads of money and no judgement,
buys the lot and sets a whole new standard to the collecting market :mad:

This is my humble opinion, others may "think different" :cool:
 
To continue the debate...this auction just ended on Ebay. Its a REALLY nice iPod and a REALLY nice box! Now, what is the problem then? Well, its not a first generation, its a 1.5 generation (nothing bad about the 1.5 gen they are nice, but its NOT a first gen!). AND the iPod doesn't belong to that box. The seller didn't want to tell me the serial on the iPod, but stated that the serial on the box didn't match the iPod! Would I buy it for 510$ from an unknown seller with no feedback??? :rolleyes:

I suppose chibiterasu was right after all...but I don't think any of the 12 bidders are "real" collectors :rolleyes:
