I was just looking at my college's alumni discount page (discounts go to students and teachers as well), and I saw a release date of October 12th!

Although I'm pretty sure that the 12th is the most likely day that preorders will open, I'm even more sure that your college's bookstore staff have no significant insider knowledge.

Makes total sense to me, considering Apple Stores were receiving them over the last couple of days. However, my guess is that Apple would still need to take their online store off-line to add that “Buy now” button to Air 4, as well as add new products announced on 13 Oct, so it will probably go on sale straight after the 13 Oct event.

Yes, also the Back to School promotion ends this day, so makes sense.

I mean I understand that, but as a web developer who used to work for a large sports company, many times we had to setup the date of an announcement or something similar before time, so when it was ready we just had to flip the switch to make it go live. I’m not saying that’s what happened here, but it could be. And it makes sense to do it right before the iPhone event, and the day the college promos end.

This has something to do with the delay, but it shouldn’t affect the WiFi model:
“iPad Air (Wi-Fi+Cellular) has not been authorized as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission. iPad Air (Wi-Fi+Cellular) is not, and may not be, offered for sale or lease, or sold or leased, until authorization is obtained.”
