I will be starting college next week and cannot decide on a device to bring with me. I will be commuting everyday and need something with me. At home I have a spec'd out Imac so no need for anything pricey or powerful. It is going to be for typing notes, calendar work, streaming music/video in between classes, browsing the web. Now I have been debating between the Samsung chromebook. (http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/535349/Samsung-XE303C12-A01US-Chromebook-Laptop-Computer/)
Or the new nexus 7. I have a 200 dollar gift card to office depot due to a warranty replacement to put towards it. If you guys have any experience using these with school or work please post! Thanks! :D

I'm using a Chromebook to type this post and based on your needs, it'll be more than adequate. The Nexus 7 is a very good device but from a note taking standpoint alone, the Chromebook would better serve you. Not sure what battery life is like considering ours is generally only used for brief periods but my guess would be 4-5 hours of use.

My work gave me that chrome book. It is a good lil pc. Lasts about 5-6 hours with my use. I used to take it with me to places until I got my Surface Pro with a Type Cover. I would recommend it for anyone needing a note taker/ web surfing device who also needed a real keyboard and had a budget.

A Nexus 7 is not for typing notes in class. Over the summer I was trying to graduate early and took 2 classes. One required taking notes every class, but all I had was my iPad since I recently sold my MBP. Taking notes even on a 9.7" tablet, although doable, is awful compared to a laptop with a full keyboard. Definitely go for a Chromebook and take advantage of Google Keep or Evernote.

Another vote for the chromebook. I'm also typing on one now! I use mine for my college work. It's incredibly light and easy to just put in your bag. I've done work on mine on the way into college whilst sitting on the train. I've got a galaxy tab 2 10.1 with a bluetooth keyboard and it can't compare to ease of typing and getting work done on my chromebook. A tablet is ok for reading PDFs but that's about it. They aren't great for production.

Thanks for all the helpful input everyone! Made my decision making easier. The chromebook should be here just in time for the beginning of classes! :D
