This sounds like a good deal. However, I'm a little concerned with the legitimacy of this company. I would hate to think I'm insured only to find out when filing a claim that this is a bogus company. Anyone know anything about or have experience with this company?

Not Bogus. i asked tons of question before signing up... it's Fireman or something company do a lil research it has all the schools in the whole US.. it ain't Bogus. but your choice.

so you pay $99/year for $5000 of insurance, or $0.20 per hundred dollars of insurance per year.

i pay $550/year for $60,000 of insurance. or $0.09 per hundred dollars per year of insurance, and i am insured by Nationwide which is well known. note that my agent let me know the rate per $100 stays the same regardless of how much insurance you have.

are you sure yours is such a good deal?

edit: just realized that i am not sure how the rates change based on a dorm situation vs. an apartment, but if you live off-campus its no different than my situation.

550/Year..? for about 60,000 that's hard to believe... what time of insurance do you have... so that means i'd be paying bout 45/year for 5,000 That's AWESOME!! but depends what it is.. tell me more..info...

Yes, please tell us more as you just perked my interest...

nothing to tell really. its just Nationwide's renters insurance. i think i have a $500 deductible and everything is covered other than flood or earthquake. ill have to reread the policy for any other specifics. just call your local Nationwide agent.

I have my iPhone and my digital SLR camera insured as scheduled items (no deductible) with my home owners -- I pay $20/year to cover them. Again, no deductible on these items and it covers just about everything from theft to me dropping them on the ground.

$99/year for some fly-by-night internet insurance company is not the way I would go. Call your local brick-and-mortar insurance company (Nationwide, MetLife, State Farm, etc..) and I bet you could get a much better rate.

As for premium rate vs. coverage -- I pay $262/year for $300,000. Home owners insurance is less expensive than renters.. but still, it is important to shop around. When I was insuring my home prices ranged from $262 to $700 for the same coverage.

If you put it on your home owners plan and claim it, won't it raise your homeowner insurance premiums?

I was thinking of insuring it this way but I don't think claiming a lost/stolen/damaged iphone is worth the mark on your insurance record.

Isn't the problem with these renters/college insurance is that once you do make a claim your rates soar dramatically? It's good for a one shot deal but that's about it. Then again, how often would you need to make claims, if ever.

Totally spammy post though. Why is it in the iPhone section. Mods?

Pricing is based on risk

I pay $475 per year for my homeowner's insurance. That covers a 675k for the physical house , 76% of that for contents and 250k of personal liability . I also have a rider that pays 100% for our jewelery and computers and it costs me $175 per year. Most insuance is priced based on real or percieved risk. My son's car insurance is roughly six times what mine is because he is a teen ager and I am not. The same goes for renter's and homewoner's insurance. How a home is constructed, the rating of the local fire department and lots of other factors play into the cost of insurance.$99 for $5000 of coverage might not be too pricey for a college student, living in an apartment of the dorm.

I have renters and have had to make a claim. Rates haven't gone up (about 10 per month for 50,000$) with a 250 deductible. Only thing is they do get you in the details. Over 2500 stolen was business related, so they said that only 1000 is covered due to business. Then stuff taken from a car would have to be filed under my vehicle insurance. That was covered was replacement value, sounds good right? But they cut you a check for the diminished value now, then you buy the new one and they give you the difference. Works in most cases, but for mine some of it just wasn't worth it. Bunch of stuff I wouldn't buy again (old satellite radio, stereo, CD's), so I ended up getting just a current value for some of them.

That said, having insurance is better then none. I go through Allstate. Having renters insurance is actually making me money, as I get a discount on my 2 vehicles insurance, as well as my GF's car, plus she pays half.

I have renter's insurance and pay about $13/month directly out of my checking account... it covers all of my stuff including iPhone, laptops, electronics, clothes, furniture, etc, and even covers the iPhone and DV cam and stuff if I drop or lose it or it's stolen. The deductible is only $150, and it's through a LARGE, reputable company.

It sucks living in Miami. I pay $3,700/year for structure and property of about $300K. This is with a $2,500 regular deductible and a $10,600 wind storm deductible. I love it here, but hurricanes suck.
