Colloquy or gmail chat on iPad (multitasking q)

I hope this is the right area to post this question, and I'm not even sure if anyone here can answer this since the new OS isn't out yet, but I read somewhere that only certain (ie most) applications will work with multitasking but one thing that wouldn't work in multitask is any chat program, such as AIM, Colloquy (irc), etc. My question is, is this accurate? And if so, would using google chat through web based gmail on an iPad work in multitask?

I'm kinda sad that there's no chat multitasking with the iPad (or rather, with the new OS). I'm still picking a 3g version up this week but having the addition of being to chat with friends while I'm doing other tasks would've made this so much better.

Yeah if you're running Colloquy you can't do anything else, so it's not that good. My solution for that is to keep mIRC running from my desktop machine, and then use a Remote Desktop app to connect to the desktop machine when I want to chat.

Jailbreak and install Backgrounder (multitasking). Works flawlessly.

Chat app's like AIM, beejive can already "multitask" through push notifications. It's not a great solution but that's Apple's answer for it. Your out of luck with IRC apps though.

I'm running Colloquy in the background on my iPad right now, I don't imagine that'll change come 4.0. It makes noise when I'm highlighted, it doesn't suck much battery, and it has a small RAM footprint. I am jailbroken, but hey.

With Colloquy for Mac, you can create a bouncer that will throw Push notifications at your iPhone/iPad whenever you're highlighted, and upon launching the app, it will load everything that's been said while the app was closed. It works great! It also doesn't require a jailbreak.

There's a hack to run iPhone apps fullscreen on the iPad, most apps look and work terribly with it enabled, but Colloquy is amazing. The only problem is that if you don't have an external keyboard, the on screen keyboard obscures what you're typing. Other than that, it looks and works beautifully.

In regards to that bouncer with Colloquy for Mac: There is also a plugin available for the znc unix-based bouncer that does the same thing, it should also be able to send push messages. I just don't think there's anything for windows. Still think I'd prefer true multitasking though.

By the way, a full-res iPad enabled native app is coming too, according to https://twitter.com/colloquyapp . Screenshots available there too! It's version 1.2, has been submitted but not approved yet.

I don't have my iPad yet but I'll have a look for that fullscreen hack, thanks for the tip! It's the first I've heard of it.
