macOS Colorful Ball of Death

just a quick fyi if you're new to mac, that thing is called the beachball, and it's not "of death" because it's just a 'wait' icon that means the same thing as MS Windows' hourglass or watch icon. As to why you're getting such a long beachball, I can't tell you.
This use to happen to me. It went away eventually though. Maybe it's indexing the documentation or something.

I just use XCode because I like all of the pretty colors and seeing how many windows I can have open at the same time.
Macs don't have a "start menu" if you're referring to the menu in the bottom left for PCs. Instead you have a dock which looks better, and at least in my experience is easier to use. Check out your dock options under system preferences. To add or remove things to the dock, click and drag them in or out of it. You can add folders to it as well the same way.
i personally call it "the spinning beachball of death"... in my view, instead of it being a waiting icon like window's spinning hour glass, the spinning beachball of death is more often a signifier that an app is no longer responding, and will never respond if you don't force-quit the app (that's if it doesn't finally crash itself before you get to kill it).
