Colour Calibration

Hi!

I have come a bit unstuck! i have recently invested in a 20" Apple cinema display and a ix4000 cannon a3 printer for uni work at home, i have been getting by up till now with doing any sort of calibration but i'm getting into the serious work now and the colours just aren't upto scratch! my last piece of work looked so washed out! it looked like i had lowered the opacity on the whole lot.

I use I use CS3 and run the latest version of leopard, I need to do some sort of calibration but really don't know where to start! i have done some research on the internet but don't seem to be getting anywhere fast!

Can anyone help? any calibration equipment or setting i could try?

if you buy any decent COLOR (not colour) calibrator for LCD, it comes with instructions.
 
The Eye-One Display 2 is a very popular calibrator, but you also need to make sure you are soft-proofing with the ICC profile for the paper you will be printing on.

Are you printing photos? What type of paper? Photoshop/Aperture/Lightroom?

Luminous Landscape has an excellent video series on fine art printing that is very helpful.

After reading kwill's thread i think i am going to go with a huey pro for the screen calibration.

but will that correct the print differences? as long as I use the correct icc profile for the paper? (Which I'm not at the moment! I was just using cheap copy paper, but ill buy better paper.)

will i need anything else to calibrate the printer to match the screen?

I have not yet been able to get a decent profile out of my Huey Pro, for what it's worth.

You get what you pay for. ;)

Seriously, this video series will save you it's worth in paper and ink alone.

There's a major source of your problem! Even if you don't color calibrate at all, you'll be much happier with your prints if you use decent paper
 
Yeah, the heavier (more expensive) paper will hold ink better.

You can force a printer to lay on more ink on cheap copy paper, but I've learned through experience that this is a bad idea. Gums up the printer pretty bad.

I must agree. I got my huey pro expecting magic. I thought it was going to fix all my color profile issues. I have yet to get a decent profile out of it. I actually revert to manually calibrating my profile.

If I were to write you a list of English speaking nations using a derivative of UK English I'd be up all night - instead have a look at the map:

With the probable exception of Canada, the list is long... Australia, Ireland, Hong Kong, New Zealand, India, South Africa... well much of Africa.

I ask Americans to notice that its not just 'the Brits' that use British English.. it's most of the world.. except America!

In short... you'll equally have better search results spelling it COLOUR, and FLAVOUR.

While you're at it learn to pronounce the letter 'H', its driving us mad!

EDIT: ...and then you've got "those gaad dahm crazy brits drive ahhn the wrahng side of the road"
EDIT2: ...and what is this "Sahcurr" game I've heard about? When the rest of the world calls it football..

... oh no I've started something now... :'(

My point is I respect that you use one way, and I use another.
You say color, I say colour
You drive on the right, I drive on the left

The difference is I say you drive on the 'other' side, I don't say the 'wrong' side, and I say you spell 'colour' 'differently - not wrong because I respect that your country (the US) chose to take letters out of certain words.

The world could just as easily say you do it all wrong - I could but I don't because that would be arrogance... something which (sorry don't mean to offend) Americans have a bit of a reputation for.

Most Americans (surprisingly most Americans don't live in Texas!) pronounce god as gawd (that's an O noise, not A) damn=dam (people in the southern states don't even say dahm) on=on, wrong=wrong.

Haahaa, well when I lived in Taiwan teaching English (which does actually use US English to be fair due to post WWII events) I had to teach how to sound the letter 'O' out in a more English accented manner.

Seriously, whenever I went into a starbucks there they couldnt understand me when I said 'Hot Coffee' unless I pronounced it 'Haaht Cahfee'!

Suffice it to say I didnt want to do that forever so I learned to speak Chinese ;)
