com.apple.speech.speechsynthesisd doesn't have an ARM binary on Big Sur

I noticed `com.apple.speech.speechsynthesisd` on my M1 Mac is in Activity Monitor as "Intel".

Surprising because Apple shipped everything universal I though.

Anyone else seeing this process as Intel on their M1 Macs?

"It's not a problem, the system was designed and built this way, using old technology".
I think that was the gist. Here's to hoping apple will update this feature in the future, as I really don't see how a user can update a part of the system himself.

On my M1 Mac mini there are two copies, one apple and one intel. I don't have gpg-agent running so I have no idea why the intel version of that is running.

You do have some, all OS apps are fat bins.

check this like:

Makes sense, I suspect it was Discord which i launch sometimes. Sucks that the process doesn't get killed automatically on process exit and sticks around even when all the intel apps are quit.

I've found my 8 GB M1 Mac Mini behaves worse in terms of responsiveness when there's any Intel code running (makes sense as any Intel code running means Rosetta has to be running in the background).

I've managed to get to zero Intel (except for nvALT which I open and quit as needed, if anyone knows of a Simplenote client which is Apple Silicon native let me know). With other key Intel apps, I only keep them open while doing work which requires them (on Intel hardware with lots of memory I usually leave them open).

It would make sense to compile a list of apps which start com.apple.speech.speechsynthesisd so that we could avoid it. Discord is one. I don't run Discord and don't know what call com.apple.speech.speechsynthesisd on my M1. nvALT and SuperDuper (haven't upgraded from Intel version yet as I may yet go back to Intel only) don't.

I've tried to get all Apple Silicon native apps on my machine but the thing that bugs me are WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. Both from the App Store are Intel only. I know this will be a non-issue in the future, but it's been over a year now since the first Apple Silicon Macs came out and these developers STILL haven't updated their apps.

I tend to use them and then close them, and make sure any rogue processes are killed off in Activity Monitor as it's surprising the difference in battery these make when running in the background.

I'm also a bit annoyed at Adobe. Although Photoshop is native, and came out pretty quick considering how they dragged their heals at the original PPC to Intel migration, CC Troubleshooter, Creative Cloud Desktop App, Creative Cloud Installer and Creative Could Uninstaller are still Intel.

Oh well - still 'early days' I guess.

Nothing unusual.facebook (who owns WhatsApp) and adobe are always slow to update their core engines (just like the 32 to 64bits shift )
I'd also say -if you would pardon me - ,that Facebook and adobe generally suck a$$,compared to even super small companies ,they can't manage to make smooth and stable softwares ,with good energy efficiency.crazy.telegram is so far ahead of WhatsApp,both in efficiency,speed,features , EVERYTHING.i don't even understand tbh
