Rocketing through the sky!
seeing how wasy it was for the Apple tech dude to replace my broken superdrive in my pb, i was wondering if you could simply buy a superdrive and have it to replace a combo drive! i want a mb but would much rather save the extra 200 bucks (.17Ghz woo hoo) but i am weary of NOT getting the superdrive since it may just come in handy (although a year of owning a pb i have never used it to burn a dvd)... I somehow doubt you can since Apple doesnt offer it anywhere but didn't know if anyone had had it done.

There is no point in replacing it later, especially if you get AppleCare.

It will void your warranty, same with a bigger HD at a later date.

It's easier to avoid the warranty problem and get external drives and an external burner.

---

Once the warranty is gone, it doesn't matter -- replace them both.

Usually there are OEM or other type replacements from the PowerBook/iBook repair houses for these types of upgrades.

The HD and the optical drive aren't DIY parts.

If you damage the machine when you replace them, Apple won't cover it.

what if you get the apple dudes to do it? I'm wondering if they will.

because according to the Apple specs, the combo drive doesnt read dual layer dvd's. Most movies are dual layer! it would suck not to be able to watch them...
