I just updated to 10.15.5. The bootup time tripled from about 1/2 minute to about 1-1/2 so I decided to refresh the macOS.

I tried Command - R. No effect. Even with the keyboard directly wired to the USB port on the PC. It worked once before, several weeks ago, but not since 10.15.5.

Holding D doesn't work either.

The symptom with Command - R is that it gets to the Apple logo and then stays there. That's all. No further activity.

I unplugged everything external except the network, monitor and keyboard. No effect.

Do I have some sort of hardware failure? Is there another way to update the macOS?

Tom

You haven't tell us the most important thing. How you run Catalina? Via Dosdude patcher? Via OpenCore? Simple use no compat check boot argument?

Anyway, that long boot time seems like the APFS +TRIM fault. You may temporarily disable TRIM and see if the boot speed back to normal.

P.S. That's just for diagnostic purpose. Even you can confirm it's TRIM related, I still recommend you keep TRIM enable.
