When I made this photograph, I also made a sound recording of the local fog horn/seabirds/ocean. Indeed, the lighthouse is about 100m/300' from where I took the photo.

In the next couple of days, I'm going to post the photograph accompanied by the sound, and I'd appreciate comments along the lines of "I like/dislike this". If anyone cares to add reasons, all the better.

I'm going to do this two different ways. The first will be to use Final Cut Pro X to combine the photograph and sound, upload the combined file to Vimeo or YouTube, and then post the Vimeo or YouTube version here.

The second will be to post the photograph together with a link to SoundCloud, where I will have uploaded the sound.

These are quite different approaches and people may have a preference for one or the other.

I am intrigued by the idea of photos + sound, and depending on the reaction may make more. That itself raises interesting issues, such as whether such photographs would be seen as falling within the rules of threads like "Photo of the Day".

Technical details of the photo and sound...

Photograph:
Leica M (Typ 240)
Leica Summicron-M 90mm f/2
Tripod > ISO 200 > f/16 > 1/45 second
Original image: RAW/DNG

Sound Recording:
Sound Devices 702T recorder
Schoeps CMC6 MK2 omnidirectional microphone
Original recording: 24-bit, 48kHz, .WAV

I look forward to both comments and suggestions.

Thanks.

This somewhat reminds me of the LivePhotos that iPhones make. I do enjoy them quite a bit. There is definitely a lack of support for this format outside of iOS. In iOS it’s a package of a small video + a high res key photo, and there isn’t a way to really share that to other platforms and the web. Which is a shame. If you had this as an iPhone style Live Photo, you could have a slight effect of the fog rolling ever so briefly, maybe the motion of the waves. But if you make a video out of this photo, even in 4K it’s less resolution than your original photo. I’d love for someone to come up with a meaningful way to share these types of images. If popular image and video sharing site supported it, it would be perfect.

In my opinion, they could be classified as somewhat distinct from regular photos, but unless we have so many of them coming in, that it makes sense to make a new “moving photo of the day” post, I’d still post this kind of work in the usual POTD thread.

That is one of the consequences of doing this via Final Cut Pro X rather than posting the photograph plus a SoundCloud link separately. One of the things that I want to determine is whether, for web purposes, there is a practical difference.

On the other hand, one advantage of turning the photograph and sound files into a video is that the image and sound start and end at the same time, although I’m unsure about how much that matters.

I really like this idea and it reminds me of an experience I had connecting a go pro someone lent me to my tripod when I was taking some landscape photos. I ended up not really liking the photos all that much but the video was just really relaxing and captured the feel of the place in a way the photos lacked. The opposite was definitely true sometimes as well when I found the photos more engaging. I haven't bought one yet but I'd really like to start to bring a go pro with me when I do landscape just because sometimes the sounds of some of these places is a big part of the beauty.
