Hi,

Looking for a Compact PAS Camera to take on a few upcoming trips.

I'm find the iPhone to distracting and want to be able to leave it in the hotel. (Trying hard to unplug myself from social networks)

Budget around £200

Thanks

What do you want to photograph?
Are you planning on processing the raw images later?
Do you have connectivity needs with your camera?
Do you want to shoot video?

Basically just wanting to replace what the iPhone 4S gives me.

So, not bothered about wifi although GPS would be nice to tag the images.

No real need for RAW as I don't get that on the iPhone anyway.

Will mainly be family pics on holiday, landscapes.

Just seen the Sony DSC-RX100 for £299 at amazon, which is a little above budget but has some great reviews.

For what it is worth, the RX100 is a cracking bit of kit. It takes fabulous pictures and in full auto mode, it will look after you.

Depends on how serious you want to be about it but you cant go wrong with the RX100 as your first camera (pay attention to these last three words as this is what it will be).

If you "just arent that into it" then there are other reasonable alternatives, like the Canon S100 for instance. Decent from that I have seen for about £170 now. IMHO not even in the same league as the RX100 though.

Yes I have an RX100 and yes I am biased. This is just my opinion feel free to ignore as I am not as experienced as some of the gurus on here.

Ken.

I dunno if you already have a camera, aside from the iPhone. But one thing to consider is to get something that has features you don't already have in your iPhone or other cameras.

For example you already mentioned GPS. Although you can tag stuff later, it is a very nice feature to have if you care about showing people where you've been. Not so much an issue if by travel you mean mostly cities, but if you hike, bike or go to more off-track areas it's quite nice.

Wifi capability is also something to consider. I know you're trying to avoid that, but when you do have a phone it can be very fun to operate the camera remotely, download pictures from it, and so on. Can make it easier to share photos with others who have phones; my Olympus, eg, can beam shots right to other's phones via an ad hoc wifi connection.

Zoom. Some compacts have surprisingly good zooms (or even super zooms). Can be very handy when traveling.

Weatherproof compacts are nice if you doing watersports. I have a Panasonic TS5 and love taking photos in tidepools, on river trips, etc. It also has a time lapse mode, wifi, GPS and great video. Other brands in the same category are similarly capable.

Any of these could supplement a smartphone camera and not necessarily duplicate it's functions.

Or just go relatively cheap; there are tons of bargains out there on cameras that would do better pics than a phone for not much money.

For $180 you can pick up a Canon SX280IS. This is my go-to PS camera that I carry with me at all times and take on vacations when I'm not hauling my big camera. Highly recommended, just leave the GPS off as it drains battery.

Dunno if you can buy in the USA, but check Canon's refurbs, like this one:

http://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/c...digital-cameras/powershot-sx40-hs-refurbished

$200US for a Canon SX40 HS. Not real compact, but a great travel camera nontheless. They've got an SX500 for $100 US as well.

Olympus US has a very small micro four thirds interchangeable lens camera, the E-PM2, on sale as a refurb with BOTH a 14-42mm zoom (equivalent to a 24mm-84mm 35mm camera lens) and a 40-150mm (eq. 80-300mm) for $320US, which is about your max. They don't ship overseas, so maybe a drop ship service would be needed. They also have a PM2 with just the 14-42 for $200US if it hasn't sold out.

OP,

Did you make a decision yet? I'm curious to know which model you selected.
