Comparison/buying advice

Groan, I'm asking one of THOSE types of questions!

Wandered into the Apple store and was struck with tech lust at the new 12.9 iPad Pro. (Fatal mistake.)

I've got the 2015 model with Apple Pencil and wondered if anybody had upgraded from that and thought it was a big improvement?

Normally it's more cut and dried than this, if it was £900 all in I would just get without a moments hesitation. But I'd have to get at least 256GB, a new pencil and case so we're looking at £1400 just for an iPad. Apple is really going crazy with pricing these days. (In terms of what it is, makes my iMac Pro look like value for money.)

I use my current one for all the usual stuff but work-wise for showing designs to clients (and potential clients) and a bit of photo retouching/Procreate etc and the Photoshop demo looked stunning. It helps me sell myself when I have the latest tech but kind of think it needs to be a justifiable jump in performance to make me happy in taking the plunge. Whatcha think?

It will be a justifiable increase in performance, in my opinion.
I see all other iOS devices switching to USB-C this year.
The new pencil is an improvement esp. in terms of charging and pairing, and also not rolling off the desk.

The bigger improvement was the 2017 iPP 12.9 in my eyes. It’s got the same display as the 2018 iPP with TrueTone, P3 and the best thing ProMotion, the 120Hz display refresh. That lowers the latency of the pencil also very much. The performance jump with the A10X was enough to do anything with it that the 2018 iPP can do. It already had the same 4GB of RAM. The 2017 iPP is even lighter and thinner with the case/folio than the 2018 one, still has a headphone jack, an OIS camera and nobody talks about bending regarding the 2017 version.

The smaller bezels and new design is easily compensated by the fact that you can buy the 2017 model for nearly half the price on several occasions.....

I just bought the 12.9 iPad Pro 64 GB WiFi 2017 version from ebay for $475. Should be arriving on Monday. The 2018 version is just not worth it to me right now for the extra cost. Maybe in a year when the price comes way down like the 2017 version did for me this time.

Hmm, the new 12.9 is less unwieldy and feels a lot better to handle, the new pencil is really nice with the wireless charging, clicking to the side and the second button. Also the USB-C is convenient because it now uses the same charge/cable as my MacBook Pro and the smaller bezels and rounded corners are nice to haves.
I’ve upgraded my 10.5 to the 11 and I also like the folio keyboard a lot, but it’s not a really economical sound decision, to say the least.

Ok, got it! First impressions, wow this thing is crazy fast! Great weight too and easy to hold. I’m in love already.

The weight of the 11in and 10.5in IPP are about 5 ounces lighter than the 12in IPP. When I carry my 10.5in IPP without a smart cover I really noticed how light it is. The iPads in general have been light. The 3rd Gen iPad is the same weight of the 12in IPP. First Gen iPad 1.5lb vs 12in IPP 1.4lb.


I love the size of my 10.5in. Before I got the smart case, I would keep my iPad in a composition notebook so that it wouldn't get scratched in my bag.


Now it really comes down to if you want to spend money on the 11in or 12.9 in. The USB-C is very tempting because it opens up more usage opportunities. Honestly I think the current iPad Pros look like the bottoms of a MBP or a iPhone 5 btw I love that design.
