Has anyone else noticed that the compass calibration is using the location fairly often. It feels like every time I pick up my 7+ the little location icon is at the top and when I look into the settings it's compass calibration that is using it.

Only had the phone a couple of days so not too sure if it's actually having any adverse effect on the battery. Was more interested if anyone else is experiencing this?

I can totally confirm this, I am sure this is why my battery has taken a hit since iOS 10. That and Location-based Alerts are always using location data.

I don't really see any reason why it needs to be activated so often. I was gonna try and restore my phone and see if it makes a difference but wanted to get other views on it first in case it's just expected behaviour.

Same behavior seen on my 6s after updating to iOS 10. Since I never use the compass much, I decided to turn it off.

any good reason why the location services should be on for Compass Calibration?

Had it off since ios9. Don't really see a difference w my mapping apps as perhaps it takes a bit longer to determine which way it's facing.

I noticed compass calibration was on every 2-3 minutes on my 7+.

I turned it off for over a week now and have used the maps app successfully without any issues so I'm not certain what requires it (besides apps like Compass / geocaching apps that require "true north").

TURN IT OFF... The only thing that should be on in location services is find my iphone and now emergency sos

Literally everything else in there can be off and you'd never know it

Wi-Fi Calling as well if that is enabled on the device. Potentially Share My Location too if that is used for Find My Friends or similar purposes.

Haven't quite figured out what exactly Emergency SOS is (as far as compared to it not being there before iOS 10), but have left it on for now given its name.

That's for sending your Emergency Contacts your location when you send an SOS request on the Apple Watch so you can turn that off if you don't own one.

Ah, I guess that explains it (and I guess it seems like I can disable it as I don't have an Apple Watch). I wonder why it's there by default without a watch being connected (or even ever being connected).

Here's the specific post with Apple's reply:

Adjusts > calendars > default alerts > time to go / leave
