Anyone know if there is any chance in hell that another generic Universal Remote code would work with the Apple TV?

I Really want to use my DirecTV RC64RB remote with it. I have a Harmony 670, but the HD DVR is setup for RF.

so, does apple use an IR command set that is compatible with any TV, DVD or VCR?

The AppleTV is fully supported by the Harmony remotes. The device is listed under "Media Center PCs" in the Harmony setup software.

A cursory examination suggests that the AppleTV CIR transmission is unique, and is not a clone of any common IR command set.

I have a $16 Sony that learned it. So, you clearly can buy cheap learning remotes that will do the trick. However, I don't think most non-learning ones will handle it. So the answer to your question would seem to be "no".
