I would like to know (1) whether or not MacBook Pro is compatible with DELL 2005FPW through DVI, (2) whether both the 2GHz model and the 1.83GHz model work with DELL 2005FPW, and (3) what the maximum resolution will be. Many thanks.

Any Mac can power any monitor that uses a standard DVI or VGA connector up to the max resolution of the display. The MacBook Pro can even power displays that have Dual-link DVI connectors (30" displays).

The max resolution on the 2005FPW is 1680x1050. You will need an adapter since the MBP has a mini DVI port.

The MBP has a full size DVI port. The iMac has the mini.

To the original poster. A little more investigation on your own part would have turned up the answers you needed.

Let me just add that DVI is a standard in monitor connection. Just because you bought a Mac does not mean that you are tied to a cinema display. The MBP virtually can connect to all monitor sources including VGA and S-Video (by using the DVI port).

As for the resolution, that is dependent on the type of graphics card, but any graphic cards made in the past 1-2 years (if not more) should have ample power to power the max resolution of a 20" screen. In fact the MBP can even do the 30" if I'm not mistaken.

Thank you!

Thank you very much for your quick answers, everybody.

I was confused by a Dell salesperson who had told me that ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 on MacBook Pro is incompatible with 2005FPW.
In fact, this video card is not in the compatibility list for 2005FPW.

I have 2005FPW connected to G5 1.8GHz through DVI.
I'm glad to know that 2005FPW is actually compatible also with MacBook Pro through its standard DVI.
I will order a MacBook Pro shortly.

Thanks again, everybody.

Oh how we all wish that were so. We all remember the Mac Mini (G4) debacle with VGA and DVI monitors. I have one and there are many, many "standard" monitors with which it will not work, even one Apple DVI monitor (just look on the display compatability page). Thankfully a 2005fpw works just fine. Hopefully Apple will never make that mistake again!

Please HELP!

Hi, I bought MacBook Pro 1.83GHz, but I cannot get 1680*1050 on my 2005FPW with my MBP.

When I connected USB and DVI from the 2005FPW to the MBP. the icons and finder was only accessible on MBP and the DOCK was only shown on the 2005FPW.

When I clicked "mirroring the display", both seem to be showing everything correctly, but the resolution is 1440*900 on both.

Do you know how to fix this?

Thanks.

if you mirror the display, then the resolution of the MBP is mirrored. the max resolution of the MBP is 1440x900. if you want the monitor to display to the full 1680x1050 then you need to enable monitor spanning. you can go into displays on the system preferances and change the dock from one monitor to the other if you would like. and also change the resolution of the external dell.

Thanks a lot for your quick response.
I stopped mirroring the displays, but I cannot adjust the locations of the two displays.
They can only be next to each other, but cannot be overlapped.
What should I do?
Thanks.

I guess I was able to solve the problem.
I moved the menu bar to 200FPW, and I found that I was in the dual display mode.
I have 200FPW on my left and MBP on my right, though I don't know the way I can work only on the 200FPW.
If there is anyone who knows how to do it, please let me know.
Thank you very much.

I'm confused as to what you want to do. What do you mean by "overlapped?"

If you only want to work on the 2005fpw, simply plug it in and then close the lid on your powerbook. You'll need an external mouse and keyboard though.

I'm sorry I forgot to say that I have kept the dock on the right of the display.

I set the 2005FPW to the left and the MBP to the right.

The DOCK was still on the display of the MBP, but after I moved the DOCK to the left, everything I need is on the 200FPW now.

Thanks.

I'm sorry if I asked a very basic question.
