Completely frozen on 2010 iMac

So I have a "Mid-2010 iMac 21.5", I upgraded the harddrive approx 3 months ago to a solid state drive and it has been amazing! So fast, very stable (on El Capitan) and I loved it. I recently noticed there was an update to Sierra, to be honest I thought El Capitan was pretty new but I thought I might as well get the latest greatest.

Ever since upgrading to Sierra about a week ago I have had the computer totally freeze up on me, well everything except the mouse. I can move the cursor around but I cannot click on anything. Keyboard shortcuts do nothing etc... The mouse arrow was actually the little finger pointer once because if froze while hovering a link, it stayed that icon everywhere I moved it. The only solution I could find was to hard reset the computer, then it did it again to today.

Is this a known issue? Is there a fix? What logs could I provide to help resolve this?

P.S. I use the stock Apple keyboard and mouse.

It could just be a coincidental failure of some sort, of course.

How long does the computer operate before freezing?

Does the freezing happen when you're booted to "safe mode"?

Does the freezing happen when you boot into a new, fresh alternate User Account?

Did you upgrade directly from El Capitan? I would recommend a clean install of Sierra. I've always had issues upgrading directly to a new OS.

I've had the exact issue on a late 2009 iMac with an upgraded SSD.

The only consistent factor that I cann see is that Safari is running (though not necessarily the frontmost app) when it freezes. Is this true in your case as well?

What's the SSD you bought?

1-tabbycat-1 - I don't use safari at all, I use chrome.

\-V-/ - I have a Samsung 850 EVO, I will try a fresh install if this keeps happening. It only has happened twice in the past week or so.

BrianBaughn - Thanks for the help! Unfortunately it is so sporadic that it is impossible to say. It happens at very random times and there is no indication that it's about to happen. So I'd say a safe mode test or other user test might be tough to check because I use the computer a lot during the day and need many of the programs on it.

I would definitely try a clean install and see if that helps. I honestly have always had terrible experiences upgrading to a new OS, be it Mac or Windows. Hopefully it's a software thing and not a hardware thing.
