Compress folder problem.

I am not used to the mac system fully yet.

I had to scan in some items and email them.
well 21 files was over 25 meg so not able to attach.

So thought I use the built in compress feature.

Found folder with the 21 items in it.
right clicked and compress.

So it created a 1k zip file and emptied the original folder!

I failed to make a back up of the folder so lost it all.

What happened?

As Finder's compress function doesn't modify the source files, the folder must have been empty before you used it.

Have you searched the trash for the missing files?

I know folder was not empty.

it contained 21 jpeg images.

I checked first as tried to email said folder.
Gmail said was too bog so I went back and checked and yes was too big.

no files in trash.

managed to recover files with help of a friend.

Compressed the folder again.
original still has 21 images and is 41MB

the compressed file is 40MB according to "get info".
Is this correct or is it just telling me how big once unzipped?

Depends on what the original files were. For instance, if they were jpegs, they are already compressed and you can't compress them further.
