Compromised Trash bin

Recently my Macbook with OS X Mountain Lion is doing something funny...whenever I try to move anything to Trash I was required to type my password and it will be deleted immediately (as the Trash will remain empty). However, the strange part is that it won't free up any space. Can someone advise how to fix it?
