I have a Power G5 Dual and twice in the last few days when I went to wake up the Mac from sleep I went to a dark grey screen that told me I needed to restart the computer. I listed it in several languages. I'm not running any real hefty programs. I do use Shapeshifter with the marshmallow theme. Photoshop Elements etc...

Has this happened to anyone else?

You got a kernel panic. Bad RAM is a common cause of (frequent) kernel panics. Corrupted power management unit settings can also be a cause of unexplained kernel panics (I had this problem with my new iMac). I can't pin down the exact cause of your situation with the information you provided, but I can offer some suggestions.

What USB devices do you have attached to the computer? Most of the sleep issues I've seen with OS X have been caused by USB. Unplugging a device while the Mac was sleeping would crash it. My mom's iMac didn't like it's 3rd party mouse and wouldn't sleep with it plugged in. RAM can do it to, but since it's crashing when it wakes from sleep, I'd say check your USB stuff.

I also had this problem (apparently), but on a PowerBook 12". I would get a kernel panic on waking my PB every two or three days, and would occassionally get them at other random times. After deleting the power management profile settings and resetting the PMU, I haven't had one in a couple of months.

how do you reset the pmu and delete power managment settings?

This is happening to me as well, but i think i may have bad ram since i have no usb connected. I believe it started after i installed third party ram from crucial. I am going to take it out tonight and see if this fixes anything

thanks for the relpies

Mine hasn't done it since those few times when I originally wrote the message. I unstalled a few themes that I think were buggy. One problem with the themes was the were sort of working on my other user (partner's) desktop but not completely. I also uninstalled Skin a Doc which never worked correctly.

I love to change my themes, desktops, and icon sets. Its kind of like art. My current desktop IS a piece of art. Macs are beautiful!

Oh BTW I'd like to hear your advise of changing the power management settings as well.

Thanks

yeah, do what everyone told you to do. good suggestions, all of them.

I suggest you not use themes though, they can mess up your system (eventually).

*whew* Well, it took a bit of searching, but I finally found the posting on the Apple discussion forums that helped me out.

First, of course, your mileage may vary. Please do not mistake me for any kind of expert in this area, because I most certainly AM NOT. That being said, the suggestions in the following links did seem to help me while I was running Jaguar. I'm now running Panther, and things are even better.

Apple discussions link - deleting power management preferences

Apple technical document link - resetting the PMU on PowerBooks and iBooks

If you have another type of system, there should be an article at Apple's support site that addresses your situation, or I believe it's in the user manual that ships with the system.

Good luck!
