I am very close to buying a Mac Pro editing setup which as you all know, isn't an inexpensive proposition.

Does anyone have experience with renter's/homeowner's insurance with computer insurance riders? I ask because most r/h insurance have limits of $3-5 thousand and my total computer assets will likely be closer to $20 thousand after all is said and done.

I'm not locked into any vendor as my wife's car insurance (I don't drive...seizures) company doesn't do computer insurance riders and I am ashamed to say I don't have renter's at this time.

So, anyone have any experience with this? Suggestions about companies that are good and those to avoid? Any help on this very important matter is GREATLY appreciated.

I plan on buying the Lojack also because I want every protection.

You'll have to take out a rider on your homeowner's/renter's insurance. For my insurance, there is maximum single-item coverage of $2,500. Therefore, I have to insure things worth more, such as jewelry.

When you get your rider, make sure you understand whether or not you are getting replacement cost or the depreciated value. If your rig lasts you 3-4 years and something happens, a $5,000 check isn't going to help you much with replacing $20K of equipment. I have no idea how depreciation on computer equipment is calculated, so you'll have to mull this one over with your insurance company.

Good luck.

Thanks for responding

Bobber: That isn't always possible. Many renter's insurance providers expressly do NOT provide for additional computer coverage, be it replacement or depreciated cost. Plus, I don't currently have coverage, so I'm starting from scratch.

hoyboy: Definitely, I'll be getting replacement. I agree that especially with computers, with the replacement costs only adding 10-15% to the policy, getting the replacement cost provision is a no brainer. As well, I'll have to look into laptop replacement since if I remove my laptop from my home (with some policies, even once invalidates their coverage) I need special coverage.

Does anyone currently HAVE one of these policies? What vendor. Approximately how much?
