Computer Recycling Experience?

As a community service our repair shop wants to start accepting electronics for responsible disposal. I've been assigned the task researching and planning the project.

This effort is not for-profit, but they also don't want to lose money on it. The goal is to do our part to keep electronics out of the landfills and curb cadmium poisoning in China, by recycling locally.

There seem to be a lot of governmental restrictions in regards to remanufacturing. One thought had been to refurb computers for donation to various community causes. Would you call that remanufacturing?

Anyone have any experience/advice on this type of project?

Knowledge, but it's UK based, In which Country do you live?

We do it at my work for free if the computer was in for service (such as brought in for repair and the customer declined repair) or you are buying a new machine that has no trade in value. If you just walk in and want to recycle a machine we do charge, because it does cost us money to dispose of this stuff. All I know is we drop the stuff off at a local recycling company.

If I were you I'd figure out how much it would cost on average to drive the items to the recycling facility and how much they charge to take the items. I'd take that number and add a few dollars per item to cover actual overhead like paying someone for having to handle the transport (such as the employees salary). With that you'll probably break even. If you guys plans on erasing any data from the equipment, I'd tack on a bit more. Time is money.
