Every couple of days my MBP (M1 Pro) restarts - I see for a split second a pink screen and then it reboots. Afterwards I see following error:

Anyone experiences anything similar? Any hints how to troubleshoot it? Block Storage device would suggest failing SSD?
Block Storage Device is a generic layer for all block storage devices - SSDs, optical disk drives, USB thumb drives, etc.

I noticed this:

last started kext at 234565656447: com.apple.filesystems.cd9660 1.4.4 (addr 0xfffffe0015b18c90, size 6310)
loaded kexts:
com.apple.filesystems.cd9660 1.4.4
com.apple.driver.AppleUSBODD 556

ISO9660 is a common CD/DVD filesystem and AppleUSBODD is the driver for USB optical disk drives. Since these KEXTs are loaded, I'm guessing that you plugged in a USB CD or DVD drive and used it to mount a disk? And since the ISO9660 filesystem was the last KEXT loaded, that's a hint that it could have been this activity which triggered the panic.

Other than that, I'd caution against leaping to the conclusion that kernel panics indicate hardware failure. They're triggered any time an unexpected and unrecoverable condition is noticed, and these can happen due to kernel or KEXT bugs just as easily as hardware failures.

Hmm.. indeed I used a couple of times (ancient) pluggable apple external DVD drive (still on USB-A, via USB-C adapter). But I plugged it last time last wednesday and mbp restarted yesterday (and I think on saturday) so there was a time between restarts when the drive was not used. On the other hand, I always used "eject" functionality before unplugging it.

I also have an external USB hub (it serves as a power source, eth-network, audio output and connection to external display to have only single cable connected to the MBP). Since a while (months already) I'm getting this notification almost constantly when sleeping/waking up the computer:

Captura de pantalla 2024-01-29 a las 16.58.31.png

(inactive USB accessories, disconnect the accessory that consumes the most [energy?] in order to reactivate the device)

Could it be related somehow?

Probably not the DVD drive if the panic happened several days after you unplugged it.

This notification you're getting is suspicious, though. Sounds like you're running up against the power output limits of the USB hub and it's having to shut one or more devices down. If it's not doing that cleanly (i.e. devices disappear off USB randomly, or only partially work), I could see that creating unanticipated errors inside one or more kernel drivers, leading to a panic.

The thing is - I don't use many devices... almost none:
- MBP is plugged to the HUB
- HUB is plugged to MBP power brick.
- HUB has also plugged: monitor (HDMI), external audio (jack), wired network (eth), brother printer (usb) and USB hub from monitor (I just unplugged it as I don't use it).

That's all devices I have/use. And none of them seem to be even remotely relevant to "io device" that seemed to trigger the panic)

Hmm. The only device plugged into the hub which should draw power is the MBP itself, which implies the hub's complaining about the MBP using too much power.

What's the hub's manufacturer and model number?

It's Baseus CAHUB-CT0G.

However, an observation - after unplugging monitor's USB hub from Baseus I don't see the error about power drain any more (it looks like Dell S2721DGFA usb hub is not active and is draining power from Baseus?)

I haven't used MBP plugged to the hub/power source extensively recently and so far it hasn't restarted. My memory is not the best, but I think the restart usually occurred while connected to the hub and external monitor so maybe the monitor's hub was a culprit for some reason?

That's odd - it's hard to imagine why the Dell hub would draw power if connected to the Baseus, because you'd think Dell would just power the hub and downstream USB devices from the Dell monitor's power supply. But if disconnecting it makes those power drain errors go away, it's worth trying to run without the Dell hub connected and see if the reboots go away.

That's what I'm doing and so far no power drain errors (those were almost constant when waking up the MBP) and so far no odd restarts but it's been only couple of days.

Thanks for the help! :)

I hope it works out - these infrequent problems can be terrible to diagnose because whatever you try, you don't know right away whether what you did worked! Good luck!
