I have been having way too much fun and wasting way too much time on the speech program where you talk to the computer and tell it to do things. It just blows my mind. Anyway, I'm tired of it telling me the same knock knock jokes and think that I am ready to tell it what to tell me. Is there anyway to set it so that it replies to something you say. For example I say: "hi how are you" and the computer voice says: "I'm fine and you?" and and stuff like that. I know I don't have a life, it's saddening. If you have any ideas on how to get a life you can post those too. I'll be forever grateful.

I'll tell you what I found out. If you drop an alias in the speakable items folder (you can get there by going to system preferences, opening speech, then click on commands and click on open speakable items folder), then you can open that application by saying "open adium" and adium will open.
I wrote a simple apple script and saved it in the speakable items folder and named it Thank you
So now when I say Thank you, Rem will say Your Welcome.
In script editor this is what is in the file Thank you
on run
set theText to "You're welcome"
say theText using "Vicky"
end run
For simple command/response, that's all you need to do.

It won't work for me. I copied your script to the editor and when I tell it to run, I hear Vicky say "your welcome" But when I moved it to the speakable items folder, it will recognize my command (making the "whit" sound) but it won't say your welcome. How rude! Maybe this isn't a complete script? i'm script illiterate btw.MacTurtle said:

I had something for Windows that would learn information you told it (by voice or type) and I could say things like 'add John Doe 555-123-4567"...etc and it would add the information into it's memory so if I needed it later all I had to do was ask. It greeted me when I got on the computer ask random questions like how my day was and things like that and I could lauch my apps before I touched the mouse or keyboard. I also had a bunch of voices and even my own custom person who would sit on my desktop with MS agent that would move in response to commands or conversations or just boredom.
It was fun to play around with and handy for adding information. I really wish there was something simular for mac. It's ashame that Windows has something as old as Agent (hasn't been updated since before XP was released) that can be programmed to do most of this but macs don't seem to have anything remotely close.

You can buy quality voices at Cepstal. Iconsider their flagship as 'David', very very smooth. Listen to the standard mac ones and then run their demo.

Back in the day, my family had the PM 6600. It was in the 1st gen ppc's. Included in the os was a voice recognition program that was almost identical to what we still have in Tiger. I used to spend hours scripting fun conversations: mostly to tick off my sister. E.g. "Computer, how are you today" "Good because your worthless sister isn't using me right now." Stuff like that. I'd always make sure she was w/in earshot once I got a new script up. My sis and I are cool now, of course. Growing up will do that to you. I guess what really bothers me is that they haven't really done anything with it in 10years. I mean the voices still sound like drunk Norwegians (no offense to drunk Norwegians). It still gets your verbal commands wrong 10-20% of the time, and it's just all-round inelegant, not very Apple-like.
i swear talking to a computer is the best way to get a switcher (my friend talking to his ibook got me) its just so damn cool like the future is now

Yeah, talking to your computer is cool to show friends, but not something you do in public.
