I am going to the airport in about an hour and am suddenly nervous about the x-ray machine cooking my MBP and external HDD.

Well the x-ray didn't kill it, but the TSA guy took it out of the neoprene case and kind of half-threw it into a plastic bin to be x-rayed. I was pretty upset.
All the airports I've been through have TSA people yelling to take your laptops out and out them in a bin..
Yeah but I put the neoprene case in the bin and told him it was a laptop. He said that was fine and sent me through the metal detector. the case came out empty.yellow said:

well what I was going to add to this thead is yeah it be fine just one thing you have to rememeber going though security check point with you laptop.
ALWAYS and I mean ALWAYS pull it out of it bag and put it in its own bin all by itself because if you dont they are goign to pull it out of the bag and put it right back though and they are not going to be as gental with it as you are. now when the laptop get the random extra check they are going for the most part going to let you hand it to them. they set it in another machine and then they hand it back to you. But when it has to go though the xray to times because the passager did not do it right they are not so nice.
Also a bad time to no do it when when a lot of college students are flying 2 or from home. At the Lubbock are port the TSA was having a rough day and you could tell that it was about the 30th-40th time he told somebody to take out laptop by itself and put it in is own bin. (I wasnt that person) I was already pulling everything out for it.
Now when ever I fly I general use 3 bins. 1 for my laptop. 1 for my carry on (laptop bag) and then one that has my shoes, what ever in my pocket, watch and anything metal I am wearing. Rather take the extra time taking everythinf on and off than bother with mess of being check.

I remember when you didn't have to strip to get on an airplane and flying didn't suck.
Count me in the strip-before-you-scan school as well. My shoes always seem to set the things off anyway, but if you fly in loafers it's no problem to slip them off for the scan and it's easy to take them off to relax on the plane, too.
On airline security: really, as far as I can tell, if I really wanted to get a weapon on a plane it wouldn't exactly be a challenge as long as it wasn't made out of metal--how stupid are these people? I'm going to use my inch-long nail clippers to hijack the plane or dismantle my seat, but I could have a six-inch hardened plastic serrated knife in my shoe and it wouldn't set off any detectors.
I suppose all the security filters out really stupid hijackers, but then how many of those were there to begin with?
I remember when getting on a plane didn't require everything short of a body cavity search, but I have no recollection of a time when flying didn't suck. I take the train whenever possible--sure, it's slower, but ever so much more pleasant.hulugu said:
