I recently upgraded to a 3G S from the previous 3G model hoping it would be faster and battery charge longer. Unfortunately I do not see a difference. Actually the battery charge does not last as long as my previous 3 G iPhone and the web browser has the exact speed. I am also concerned that the screen sometimes dims and does not bright when I tap it. I have to attempt several times before it can brighten up again. I did not have these problems before with my regular 3 G. I purchased the phone about 25 days ago, at a ATT retail store. Is it reasonable to do an exchange for another iPhone or these problem are normal with the 3G S? I did troubleshoot with Apple Customer Service and they felt the phone was okay. But I think I still got a bad batch. Everything that I read about the 3G S is that it has better battery charge and much faster than the 3G.

The screen brightness issue is a known bug with 3.0 which should be resolved in an update. The 3GS has a faster processor so yes things should happen faster...but your browser rely's on your connection. If you want to see a difference, go up to a friend with a 3G and the both of you should push a factory icon (i.e., Photos, Messages, Phone, etc.) at the same time and then you'll see the difference. The battery issue is another story. If you restored from a previous backup, then your settings from your previous 3G carried over to your new 3GS, which can affect your battery life. Try to set up your 3GS as new or reset your 3GS settings to factory. Also, you may try and turn off push and lower your mail settings to either manually fetch or fetch less frequently if it's not that essential for you. Also, research other methods posted on the forums, because I know I'm missing other pointers.
Try doing a complete restore through iTunes and see if that fixes things for you, sometimes a small problem with the firmware can cause strange things like that, but do it soon while you're still within your 30 days and if you still see the problem go exchange it at AT&T. If it's after your 30 days you'll have to go to the Apple Store.
Good call! I forgot to mention the battery settings. You will notice a major difference by setting it up as a new iPhone and not restoring from a backup.
