concerns install SSD in mac mini

Hey guys,

I just got a 2012 i7 mac mini and I love it. I am planning to purchase 16 gbs of ram and wanted to install a SSD as well. My concerns come from install, is it alright for the machine to have two hard drives in it at a time? Like does it have the correct power out put or does it produce more heat which could cause problems over time? Thanks guys, I am just being cautious.

Two hard drives are fine. It is designed for that. If you have a server/fusion version, they have 2 drives installed at the factory. Both drives are 2.5" SATA drives so there is no power requirements - just plug them into the cables.

If you are installing a second drive you need to buy the cable to hook up the second drive because your machine did not come with one unless it is a server/fusion model.

Just the base is what I got, not server. I guess ill order the dual HDD kit from Ifixit with the tools. Thank you!

I have two HD's in my 2012 mini. I used the OWC cable kit as well as an OWC SSD.
I use the SSD as the main HD and the OEM 1TB HD as my Time Machine backup drive, installation was pretty straight forward, just take your time!
