Other Condition of trade-in on IUP?

I joined the IUP a couple of years ago and last year was my first upgrade. My 8 that I traded in was immaculate and even the staff member said he’d never seen a used phone so clean and tidy before. Even so, he spent a good couple of minutes scrutinising it from every angle like he was desperate to find something so he could reject it.

I’m not concerned as my XS Max is the same, but noticed in the reservation email it says “Since you’re covered under AppleCare+, don’t worry about the condition of your current iPhone. However, you may need to pay a fee to have it repaired.”
This got me wondering what was an acceptable condition for a trade-in. Obviously cracks, big chips/gouges, etc need fixed, but are a few scratches and dings ok or do you need to get a repair under AC+ before you upgrade?
I’d appreciate people’s experience as I really want to go back to being caseless again with my 11 Pro. Thanks very much.

I got that same response from the staff member regarding my Jet Black iPhone 7 when I had it on iUP 2 years back and was very clean, no scratches, no nothing. Obviously mine was in the case the entire time.

As far as I know, scratches on the screen are fine and I had no issues last year trading it in when on iUP. But maybe a severe deep scratch that is noticeable, they might consider that a crack maybe, not sure. But I'm sure that if they determine that you need to repair, I'm sure they just charge you the fee right then on the spot and just trade it in (at least that how the process works, sorry never done one like that before).

You should visit the apple store sometime today and see if the crack on the back would be acceptable? I would assume that if it's just a single hairline crack and no sign of physical damage around it, you may be fine but a spiderwebbed cracked glass would be a different story. Since I never had a damaged iPhone up on trading in, I'm not sure how it's done.

As long as there is no cracks or dents your ok but even on the dent part its subjective to the employee or the manager. If there is a crack on the front display they will bill you the $29 AppleCare incident fee if there is more damage than that then you would pay the $99 incident fee

Crack on the back you will be charged the $99 incident fee get that taken care of before you trade in

Thanks for the replies guys, very helpful. As much as I love going without a case, I nearly always drop my phone at least once. Think I’d rather keep the 99 in my pocket, which would probably be 198!

When you had to take your phone back to the Apple store to trade it in they really only gave it a cursory glance (not saying that would always be the case). I always mail mine back but I've never had noticeable damage on my old phones.

So depending on the Dent they may or may not care when trading it in if they did it would be the $99 deductible and your good to go

they spend a lot of time checking for liquid damage too.
even tho it's supposed to be water resistant.

Swapped my XS max for the 11 pro max under iUP and it had been dropped a couple of times. No cracks but the steel band had been scuffed in 2 places. They did not care in the slightest and did not have to pay for the policy excess. Also they did not check for liquid damage at all, as the phone powered up and didn’t have a broken screen or back I was good!
