Im a heavy FCPX user. Who does proxy workflow sometimes, and loves using native codec out the gate.
What would be better overall for me?

Single Vega II, or 580x w/ afterburner?

Also, I have the trashcan w/ dual D700's. Would the 580x alone be faster than what i have today?

I also have the trashcan with dual d700 and all the test I was looking say that 580x is overall 50% faster than d700.
 
I dont know man, about afterburner, I really wanna see some benchmarks before I would buy that thing. It sounds very promising, but It could be one of these apple style solutions that sound amazing at first but then end up being useful Only super rarely, like thunderbolt 1 was when it came out... I could be wrong though, and sure hope that I am. Would love if AB would accelerate Prores generation from h264 formats, and playback of course.

If the benchmark software only uses one then it will only measure one.

A 580 being 50% faster, highly likely means it was only using one.

FCPX can often use two GPUs but it has sections that don't. So which half are you in most of the time is relevant to whether the "can only use one" benchmark is good enough or not.

If looking to be better than both D700 then the Vega II is a better move. The W5770X may be pretty close option later on.

That's the point here. In my use (FCPX with 4K movie from osmo pocket, mavic air and sony camera) with GPU history activated from Activity Monitor, I can see a very rare use of the second GPU during FCPX work. So, a single 580 will be a better choice for me.

In the OpenCL and Metal test using Geekbench the value I have from my nMp with dual D700 (can't tell if it use only one) is 50% under the value I can see from 580.
 
Since the new AMD 5700X is already in the pipeline, there is a good chance for early adopters to go with that new card very soon. They may sell the old 580X if space is tight.
Sooner or later, those 580X cards will find its way onto eBay. I am wondering if a new Mac Pro 7.1 with two 580X cards would be a workable solution for you. Having said that, I am not a big fan of the 580 at all. I would only choose the basic model in combination with an aftermarket Vega VII card and the Belkin cable kit from the accessories section. Most of all, - basically the Vega VII is the Vega II, most people do not know this.
 
I could really do with some clarification. Is it correct that we can buy any AMD card that currently works in an eGPU and slap it in a PCIe slot of the Mac Pro? That seems to be the case from reading the support docs…

Because if that is the case, I'll grab a 580X and buy my own cards. The Pro Vega II's are crazy expensive.

I'd have to go dig for references and my recollection may be foggy but I seem to recall the VII and the MI50 were basically the same silicon, maybe some binning going on and some features suppressed on the VII. The Vega II was then an Apple specific implementation of MI50 so again sharing similar (perhaps even same) silicon as VII. Of course the VII has far less memory and no infinity fabric as well as none of the advantages of the MPX module (TB3, passive cooling, no cable management, etc...).
