I'm thinking of buying the iMac , but can't decide on which one to go with ?

Yeah I know there have been many threads like this , but ... Not what I need.

Ok so here is what I'll be doing :

- Photoshop work [ heavy work ]
- Web browsing
- Youtube
- Movies
- light video editing
- Listen to music
- And other light stuff

So Which one will do good for me ?
I'm thinking 27" for the size cause the 21" is like squarish ..

I need something that will last for years not months

The 21.5 has the same aspect ratio as the 27 inch, which is 16x9 widescreen. However I'd recommend the 27 inch for photoshopping and video editing.

Get the core i5 or i7 variant, and put in an additional 2x2 gigs of aftermarket ram.
 
Go with the i7, or you'll be regretting your decision when the new imac comes out in about 4-8 wks.

I know… I just wanted to comment on his name (PJ's totally like my favorite band of all time, yo)

Anyway, if it's as certain that we'll have new iMacs in the next 4-8 weeks as it is that we'll have new iPods, I'm a happy guy

True, but I think that most in these forums would agree that the refresh will occur in september at the latest (apple has never gone more than 11 months without a refresh), and 8 weeks puts it at September. Could occur later, but If I were a betting man id bet on new imacs by then.

Right now the best date for an update is around 9/8/2010 due to the current promotion.

You can check the recent upgrade history, but it is generally an update before or after.

Better not to suggest to newbies (not only the poster but anyone who may read this thread) that new iMacs are coming in 4 to 8 weeks with such certainty, though. And "September at the latest" could be up to 13 weeks from now.

Which is why i included a link, showing the usual dead spot for new Macs around the yearly back-to-school promotion.

you may doubt it, but Apple tends to not update machines during the promotional periods.

Even the iPods tend to get updated after these promotions end.

People give too much significance to random patterns.

The aluminum iMac refresh was a long time ago (4 releases), but it was pretty major and very publicized (Special Event and everything); that one was right smack in the middle of the promotion (new iMacs Aug 7, promotion until Sep 16).

There are several other more important reasons for the iPod dates, and anyway the original touch (pretty important release) was released before the 2007 promotion ended; the 2G iPod touch was released before the 2008 promotion ended.

The signs for this being an odd year out for iMac updates is there, but then again it is coming from Hon Hai, and they are problem central for the iPhone 4 fiasco at the moment.

judging from the latest latest iP4 news i dont think they will be completely put off by it - i think it really is a display GUI based problem. but who knows, it may just put everything off :(

damn stupid iPhones
 
All the uses you list bar photowork would suit any iMac. For photos a large monitor is better. I have the 27" and it's great for image and video work.

There isn't a huge difference between the i5 and the i7 so if you are looking to save a little the i5 would do. The i7 will pull ahead as time passes and more software exploits its capabilities but both are very fast machines.

As regards the pending iMac update - yes it will happen sometime, probably sooner, but that could still just mean "before the end of the year". It is unlikely to be a major hardware leap. If you want a machine now, buy now.

Do not know but I still have the original iMac and it still works, even ran OS X on it once to see if it would work(It's 6GB disk was a tough fit). Had two of these first iMacs, but one of them broke down after 7 years, the other one is still going strong after about 12 years. Can you say Trolling....

exactly my point - i have an original G3 233MHz iMac running great (dare i say faster then most P4s lol?) - dad has a ~6 year old iBook that he uses. my 4 year old MBP still is great appart from the battery life (which was never good anyway lol). :rolleyes:
