Confirmed: Mid-2010 MacBook Pro 17 inch - 16GB

Hello and Happy New Year to everyone. This is to confirm that the MacBook Pro 17 inch from 2010 can support 16GB of memory fully under High Sierra. Below is the proof - according to the seller of this laptop, the computer recognizes all 16GB of memory and does NOT kernel panic.

He recommends PC3-8500 memory 8GB chips for this.

That's interesting as I think the i5 540M CPU is only supposed to support 8GB, which is a bummer.

Seeing is believing.. the seller told me the laptop recognizes all 16GB of memory.. he told me it works in High Sierra and also in Sierra. It does work under Windows and of course Ubuntu.

What he doesn't tell ya is that model has a known defective GPU . Also only runs at sata 2 speeds . I have both the 2010 & 2011 13" i7 models & my 2011 smokes the 2010 badly regardless of ram installed .

Saying he never had kernel panics is not proof . Do some research on that model before you buy.

The SSD is worth more than the MacBook . Not worth 900 maybe 500.

I have the same model he does.. and I will try it myself. My 6,1 MacBook Pro doesn't have a GPU problem - thats a 2011 model which has that. The 2010's don't have those issues, at least mine does not.

My 2010 does have kernel panics with only 8gb ram . 900 for a 8 yr old laptop even with SSD imo is steep . They even recalled the 2011 15&17" models due to the graphics issue .

Not saying its a bad laptop mine still works great except for when I try & encode with handbrake & get kernel panics .

Just be sure to check his feedback before you buy , if it looks good by all means go for it .

16GB of Ram? I thought that it doesn't. Maybe yours because it's late 2011 can handle it. Mine is mid 2010.

Again, this screen if from a Mid-2010 17 inch: MacBookPro6,1 is the 17 inch core i5 and core i7.

That's cool to hear, any reason it wouldn't work on a 15" i5? I just came here to see how much I could upgrade my 15" i5 Mid 2010. 16GB of RAM and an SSD sounds like it'd do a good job. I gotta say, although I don't use my laptop for anything intensive anymore, it's going incredibly well given that it's 7 years old. It's my one and only apple product so don't have anything to compare it to but I'm very happy, if only I still qualified for a student discount....

I bet you could push the bus speed up to. I am running 16GB's at 2133mhz in my 2011 MPB. I have tested and verified the increase on performance using multiple before and after geekbench tests with each increase in memory bus speed.

This is correct 15inch is the only one with a problem that looks like a bad GPU but it's a capacitor. The 17inch is golden.

I wouldn't buy the 15" and 17" 2011 at any rate, they are pointless.

Yes, but I decided to jump to a 2011 17 inch anyway.. and now I may go to a 2012 15 inch and lose the 17 inch due to USB 3.0. Retina I won't touch - nothing upgradable.

I have a Macbook Pro 15" (Mid 2010) possible for me to upgrade it as well to 16GB ? i ready online and all i found is 8GB is Maximum.

It suffers from having an undersized capacitor that causes kernel panics when switching from Intel graphics to nVidia graphics.
