Time, because it rules EVERYTHING!
Shame really, but put to bed any dreams of the LG Pro, the Nexus Phablet, the Sony Xperia Z5 and so on and on coming with the new Snap Dragon 820...

At SIGGRAPH this week Qualcomm said some details on the upcoming chip's GPU, but they also confirmed devices with the chip will not be on sale till next year...

http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/0...-snapdragon-820-devices-wont-come-until-2016/

Qualcomm's new Adreno 530 GPU won't be something you'll find in any phone until next year, but nonetheless the newer, better, faster GPU powering the upcoming Snapdragon 820 chipset was detailed (well, lightly detailed) at SIGGRAPH 2015 this week. Qualcomm also confirmed that Snapdragon 820 devices will be available starting in the first half of 2016 - all but ruling out the chip in rumored Nexus devices launching this fall (unless, of course, they're not launching until next year).

Amazing but what I dont get, every year I see similar slides of double digit power drops yet the battery life isnt getting that much better. If you go back 2-3 generations the power could be even 100% more efficient. Is the screen resolution the big factor here? If so, at what point will screen res stabilize and will users finally start seeing drastic improvements since chip performance/efficiency will continue to improve?

That sucks, as the 820 was supposed to rival even the Samsung SoC this year in the Note 5.

I heard rumors of a 815, that was a tweaked 810, is that still coming this Fall ?

This has been common knowledge for a while, I thought?

Heard it on a podcast like a month ago or so....

Anyone I agree that battery life and QHD are more pressing problems. My G4 is great but the screen annoys me with how much power it draws.

Nope, there was no confirmation from Qualcomm and it was highly expected the new Nexus Phablet would come with the 820 chip.

Sooooo the question now is what will they come with? I mean with new of Samsung's Exyno's being used in none Samsung devices, and the 810 Chip having it's overheating issues, will be interesting to see what happens in this space.

It seems the new 620 chip is pretty good, but the GPU won't have the fancy new features it seems, from the article:

The abilities of the new Spectra image signal processor (only in the Adreno 530) and related software advances were a key point during Qualcomm's presentation, with the company claiming a number of improvements to image processing across multiple fronts.

And then:

As to the titular Adreno 510? All we were told is that it won't feature the fancy new Spectra ISP, and that it will be in the upcoming Snapdragon 620 and 618 chips.

Well I am glad they are bringing it next year rather than rush it, as they rushed the 810 and we all know what happened there...

I mark 2015 as the year to skip any upgrade, not a single flagship has anything much over what we got late last year. The Nexus 6, Droid Turbo and Note 4 still pretty much amongst the best you can get until MWC 2016 it seems.

The Android Central guys definitely said there would be no phones with 820 this year, they tend to get all the info before most people. So I didn't have my hopes up!

Agree that they shouldn't rush it, 810 has been a genuine disaster for them - Samsung have done far better this year.

That's too bad, One thing I had not heard was the heat generation from the 820, is as bad as its predecessor?

Not sure, seems to be conflicting rumours about that one. Guess we will have to wait and see but you would assume the heat issues would be resolved?
I would hope so as the 820 is not using ARM Cortex Cores unlike the 810 which is. Just like the Snapdragon 805 and the chips before it, the 820 will use Qualcomm's own custome cores, apparently it will be a Quad Core, with 4 very power efficient and powerful cores, and a Adreno530 GPU.

We will have to wait and see how it pans out.
