Confused about 3g unlocking

I bought my iPhone in august, and since i've done every software update. Do I still have to wait until new years, or is that only the people who bought an iPhone recently?

You have to wait. The people who bought recently will not be able to unlock with the New Year's unlock.

Yeah, it appears new & refurb phones are coming with 2.2

If you updated to the default 2.2 already you can't unlock. The only way to unlock with 2.2 is if you built a custom firmware with Pwnage tool that includes the 2.1 baseband. If you have a vanilla 2.2 from iTunes, you're out of luck (for now).
