Confused about Beta

So I am already running the Catalina beta, but I guess yesterday there was and update. I don't understand why in the Update section of preferences it says UPGRADE. When i tried to install it, it said something like Macintoh HD/volumes/ contains files and these will be erased.

What does it all mean?!

Wait a minute! There are several possible meanings to attach to "new" in this context.
Really new: just born, and with the ability to use a computer
Not as new: Used Windows, and recently got a Mac
Newly discovered: Long time Mac user, just found this forum

It's safe to run, everyone pretty much got the same alert. It's like a precursor but it didn't change nor delete any files or my HDD

I mean come on y’all. I meant new to this forum, though my friend @s2mike is here a lot. Also, I realize i probably shouldn’t be running it on my main machine, but eh screw it. I should have stuck to Reddit!

I haven't seen this alert before, but it didn't erase anything for me when I updated.

The warning is about files and folders in the root of your hard disk, the first folder you see when you double click on the hard disk in Finder, the one with the Applications, Library, System, Users folders.

The root of the boot disk will be read only in 10.15.

Unfortunately, you'll get this sort of response here too often. I guess you do everywhere online nowadays. I'm old and it washes over me, but it still annoys me when someone, probably with the right knowledge, can be bothered to reply in a negative fashion and not give the decent answers that everyone else has provided.

I got to this thread because I had exactly the same question. The generous people on this thread gave me the confidence to go ahead with the update. And it's all good for me on my Mini...

Yea, I got the update (19A512f) from Apple yesterday morning. But I don't even bother to mention things like that in this forum for the same reason. I only use this forum for reading and learning, very seldom do I ask a question, it's not worth all the negative comments you get.

I have no idea how you can get to Catalina beta in the first place. I thought the process was a bit convoluted to sorta prevent average joes to mess up their daily machines. Oh, well.
Welcome to the beta train and be sure to make backups other than time machine backups. Acronis Backup. Carbon Copy Clone. Choose those software instead of relying on only Time Machine. Better yet, buy a hard drive larger than your Mac internal hard drive so that you can create a sector based backup (this mode replicate the exact sector data on target disk, so that unsupported file system volume can be backed up. More info here: https://kb.acronis.com/content/1543) Catalina beta is a dumpster fire and will remain that way throughout the entire beta period.

What the message meant was that , if for some reason you had a folder in the root of your boot drive, that was not native to the MacOS, those files will be lost. For example for you had a “/tacos/tacocat.jpg” that file and everything else in “/tacos/“ will lost, because “/tacos/“ will deleted with the system/data partitions are separated.

To avoid this, you could just move “/tacos/“ to another place such as desktop, user or documents folder.
