I've been working on this for days and can't get clear on how to look for a monitor that will work with my macbook air. Here are the specs:

early 2014
11 inch
thunderbolt
1366x768 (which I understand can go up to 2560x1440)
OS: El Capitan

There are SO MANY monitors with so many specs - I'm overwhelmed. I just want something to plug into my computer so I can read sheet music. Ideally something portable or small. It just needs to be at least 11" tall (like the size of a sheet of music)

Any direction you can point me to would be helpful - or at least help me narrow down what will work with my set up. Thanks! :)

The choices out there are indeed overwhelming, but your needs are simple so that will help you to filter out all the higher end features you won't need. I would look for a 21.5" 1080p monitor that is compatible with the USB ports for your MacBook Air. For ease of reading sheet music, you might want a display that is adjustable up and down and tilts backward and forward. I see lots of displays with features on Amazon in the $75-100 range. If you want to buy in-store, take a look at what your local (if there is one) Best Buy offers too.
