So, I have a pre-order to pick up in-store this Friday. They've already charged me for the purchase and the order status is "order in progress", presumably going to stay this way until my assigned time window. Unfortunately, the only free time slot was the very last one of the day, right before the store closing time and because of something unforeseen at work, I might end up missing my time slot. My question is, would I still be able to go the next day to pick up my item (seeing as I've already paid for it), or will I be automatically refunded and the stock gone?

I've asked two Specialists in store and checked online, but each source has given me a somewhat different answer.

Specialist #1: "We will hold it for 6 hours, even if it's the next day"
Specialist #2: "We can't reallocate stock, so if you miss it then it's gone"
Apple email: "If you're unable to come in during this time window, you can still pick up your order, but wait times may vary" (it's unclear if "wait time" includes the next day, or if it means whenever stock is next available, which is presumably late October)
MacRumors 2014 post: "They'll hold it for 20/21 days since I've already paid for it"
MacRumors 2015 post: "Most in-store pickup programs give you a week"
MacRumors 2017 post: "14 days"
Business Insider 2017 post: "You will get reminder emails every week until the 21st day, at which point Apple will refund your order and cancel your purchase"

I'm hoping that they'll keep it for a few days because I've already paid, and that the Specialists confused in-store pick up with in-store reservations where you show up at the agreed time and then pay.

They typically hold 14 days. Yes, it used to be 21 days because prior to the iphone X release, Apple.com online orders did infact gave you 21 days instead of 14. But that got changed after the 2017 Holiday return policy and became 14 day return policy for online orders as well. So that is the case for 14 day hold at the apple store.

No they won’t keep it, but I would go in before ur time slot and they will still give probably give it to you. Like maybe on ur lunch. I had one for 10 but went in at 8 and they gave me mine.

Also I want to add, if it's a paid item then yes they keep it for 14 days on your name. After that, they refund the money back to you.

Now if you do a walk-in reservation and decided to come back later, then those gets release back to it's inventory the next day.

As long as you paid online for in-store pick up, they hold it for 14 days as they slap a sticker on the phone, so they can't release that. I did this and was able to pick it up on day 13. I keep getting e-mails from them about my pick up.

OP I’ve always chosen in store pickup for launch day phones (when available).

I bought my iPhone 5,6 plus and iPhone X all with in store pickup.

Early in the am, like 6am ish local time Apple will start scanning in the phones and assigning them to customers.

Once your phone is scanned in, a sticker with your name and info is placed on the box and put aside.

Then you will receive an alert from the store you have chosen saying they have something special be prepared for you.

And when they open, you will probably get another notification saying you can pick it up and what you need to bring bring with you.

I find it’s the best way to get one on launch!

Thank you for the information. Do they charge your credit card before pick up as i do not see any charge or Pending Charge on my credit card for store pickup order yet?

There have been times I have been charged prior, then the charges go away.

Then charged again that morning.

In some cases people have been charged the Saturday after while having the phone 24 hours.

But as long as you paid for it, and pre ordered you are fine. You will be charged at some point so have the funds ready.
