Hey everyone!
My ipad pro 12.9" will be arriving in a couple days and I have been picking what apps I'll be downloading. I want to try and save as much space as I can and avoid unnecessary storage in the long run. I do not want any music or lots of photos on my ipad, as have my iphone for all that.

I wanted to know when I setup my ipad pro, how can I prevent almost everything from transferring from my iphone to my ipad pro. Meaning I don't want any music, photos, apps etc. to transfer over via icloud etc.
My icloud storage is full on my iphone, which is totally fine....but after setting up my ipad I want the icloud to be empty.

Do I need to register my new ipad with a new apple account to prevent this, because I still want to use imessages associated with my phone number?

Any help is appreciated. Sorry if the question is sorta confusing :(

On your devices, go to Settings > iTunes & App Store, and disable any Automatic Downloads. Take a look now at what the settings are for that on your phone. It will be the same on your iPad.

For photos, you need to disable iCloud photos on your iPad.
For music, idk about Apple Music. Maybe there is a similar option to not download your library to iPad.
Just a friendly tip here: DO NOT rely on external storage for your iPad. iPadOS manages them extremely poorly and transfer speed is abysmal.

About external storage, it all depends. I have no issues using a 1TB G-Tech drive for backups with my 2018 12.9.

Can you clarify what you mean by this bit? None of the other responses seem to have picked up on it... but iCloud storage is iCloud storage (not tied to any particular device) and if it is full 'on your iPhone' it is full everywhere. iPhone, iPad, Mac, the internet from a Windows computer...

Sorry if my question is sorta confusing....but when I go to setting on to my iphone icloud storage, the 5gb of free icloud storage is full with photos etc.

I'm under the impression that when I setup my new ipad pro with my apple id, my icloud storage will all transfer to my pro, taking up that 5gb of free space. Because I have lots of unwanted/wanted photos/others that would take too long to sort through.

My goal is, When I setup my new ipad pro I don't want anything to transfer over except my phone number, for imessages.

If that is all you want, you will then need to turn off ALL iCloud options except contacts and maybe keychain On your iPhone before doing transfer.

Ah I see. You mean there'll be 5GB of unwanted stuff downloaded to your iPad from iCloud.

iCloud storage is in the cloud, hence the name. Your Apple ID like everyone else’s gets 5GB iCloud space. If it’s full, it’s full in the cloud.

If you plan on backing up to iCloud you need to have sufficient free space for that task.

If you don’t want to transfer anything from your phone to your iPad, then simply set up the iPad as a new device. Then adjust to not have automatic downloads and only get the apps you want.
