Confused about iPhone!

I have the following problems with my new iPhone. I have asked in the shop where I bought it, but they are no use at all! If anyone can answer any of the following, I'd be very grateful!! Apologies if these are duplicates, couldn't see what I was looking for.

1. Bluetooth does not work. I've been told that it may only be compatible with other iPhones, and not other Bluetooth phones, Nokia for example. When I switch Bluetooth on, my friends phones find me, but mine just says 'searching for devices' and never finds anything. Is this my phone, or is everyone finding the same thing?

2. I have been trying to sort out ringtones. I have followed the guide on itunes help, but when I go to View and View Options as it suggests, the option to show which songs can be used as ringtones isn't there. There should be a tickbox called 'ringtones', but there isn't. I have the most up to date itunes version, have already checked this.

3. I have the blue box on the home screen as other people have said, but there has never been an 'e' in it, the box is just plain. I connect to wi-fi at home and out if it is available, no problem. But when there is no wi-fi, I still get emails etc, and am concerned that I might be being charged for being online. Is this possible? (I am in the uk, and it is a uk phone on O2uk.)

1. Bluetooth will only work with headsets and will not allow any other form of connection.

2. I use iToner so do not use iTunes for my ringtones.

3. The blue box minus the E is for standard GPRS, this is included in the O2 data plan so do not worry.

Well, I'd say if you do not see the WiFi or an E, then you're connecting via GPRS…

Also if you have "data roaming" switched off you won't be accessing any network other than O2. So no extra charges.

Bit peeved to be honest that considering you have an 8gb ipod full of music, its still so hard to sort out a ringtone!! Any other phone and you can just use an mp3 from your music library. Hope they fix that bit of it soon, and make it easier. I am not very technically minded which is why I liked itunes - so simple to use.

i'm not sure about connecting to other devices, but i'd at least make sure you buddies phone is discoverable and see if that helps. it may not work either way, but it's worth a try.

the issue with ringtones that people forget is that record companies have been making a fortune out of them for years. A lot more money than they've making out of singles. So they protect their digital rights carefully. They won't let apple let its iTunes custers just is their music sas ringtones without paying extra and the absense of ring tones in the I'm suggests they have not yet struck a deal in this territory

Well

1. iphones blutooth will only work with headsets and you cannot use it for any other purpose like file sharing.
2. You have to first search the songs with the ringtones bells on them, then buy the song and then customize the ringtone. So until and unless you buy the song which is also a ringtone, then only you can create a ringtone. Google itoner.
3. Your iphone comes with unlimited data plan, so you wont pay anything extra for data usage.

I read that on the itunes help. What it says to do is, go to View, then to View Options, and put a tick in the 'ringtone' box. Then there will be a cloumn showing you which songs can be used, with a bell symbol. But I don't have a 'ringtone' box!! I have the most up-to date version of itunes (whatever number that is!) but it just isn't there. I therefore can't click on a bell to take me to itunes and make a ringtone. No idea why the option isn't there, but it definitely isn't. Even got my friend to check that I wasn't being stupid!! No one can find it. Is it on other peoples itunes?

Its really easy to get your own ringtones on there by changing the extension of a 30 second or less .m4a file to .m4r - then just add it to iTunes

Seriously have no idea what you mean!!! As I said, I chose itunes and hence iphone because I can really only do the basic stuff.

Really you cannot connect to your mac via BT with the iPhone? This is news to me. And I swear I am not being sarcastic, I guess I never picked up on that little bit of info.

Then I'm doomed!! instruction 2 - Use audacity to cut the song to 40 seconds or less.

Huh??! I think I need to go to the Apple shop again....

This is why people like me don't buy new stuff very often!

Audacity is VERY simple. Download the software.
Open the software, then open the .mp3 file that you want to create a ringtone.

Use your mouse to select 40 seconds or LESS of the song that you want to be a ringtone. You can do this anywhere within the song.

Goto EXPORT selection as .mp3. Save the new mp3 40 seconds clip.

Then follow the rest of the directions.
