Confused about itunes in the cloud.

Okay, i understand that right now i can back up my purchased music into the cloud and in the future back up my ripped CD's to the cloud via iTunes Match. What i do not understand is that why you can not access your ripped music from the cloud on your iOS device. Doesn't this defeat the purpose of the cloud since all your music needs to be on your device anyway?

I can understand it from a backup standpoint, but a local drive would have the same affect. Plus how often do you ever go somewhere away from your PC and have to restore your music onto your device? It would be so much better if you could pick and choose what ripped songs you wanted to download to your device as well as purchased music. Am i missing something here?

Yes, you are missing something and that puts you in the majority until all this is figured out. iTunes Match allows you to access your entire music library from the cloud. Songs that don't match (already in the cloud) are copied into the cloud. They are all available to your iDevice to download and play.

Thanks so much for the reply. This helps a lot. So now all we need to do is wait for iTunes match to be released to upload ripped cd's.

Its unfortunate that Apple requires you to pay to upload/match your itunes music though. Unless there is a way to bypass iTunes match.

I presume they charge because uploading your own music will require storage space. Music from the iTunes store meanwhile doesn't require additional space...
