confused on setup

Okay, I just bought an appletv. the only other thing I own is an iMac G5 connected to my cable modem. Is there anything else i need?

Only way I can get apple tv to appear under devices is if I connect it to imac via ethernet wire. I got impression appletv and imac G5 both had something built-in to them so my music could be streamed to apple tv.

Is this correct? if not, what else do i need to buy?

Also i'm not big on wireless stuff. I still feel data is transfered quicker and smoother via wires. Is it possible to have internet plugged into back of imac and also have apple tv plugged into imac at same time?

Any help would be appreciated.

Both the Apple TV and iMac need to be connected to the same network, be it wireless or wired, if you wish to connect the two.

Do you currently have a network setup in your household, or is your iMac connected directly to the cable modem? ...If it's the latter, you need to buy a wired or wireless router in order to share your internet connection with both devices. Your cable internet will go from the modem to the router, and then from the router to your computer and Apple TV.

Simple. If you don't have a wireless set up, then you'll need a router to "split" your internet connection. One output on the router would go to your Mac and another other to you AppleTV.

apple tv with be connected to internet via its one ethernet port to my router. how do i then connect imac to apple tv?

is there an adapter that exists that i could plug into the ethernet port to expand it to 2 ethernet ports?

Apple states you don't need a computer with apple tv, but they don't mention I'll now need to buy a router, since my cable modem has only one ethernet cable coming out.

Most routers have additional ethernet ports on them. You plug the cable modem's ethernet into the WAN port on the router and then your other devices (computer, ATV) plug into other ethernet ports. This allows all your devices to share the one line coming in from your modem. You can then run ethernet from the router to your ATV if you wish.

You don't need a computer to rent movies, buy songs, etc. from the Apple TV, but you need a router to bring all your devices on your network together.

i got it all working.

I got a router and plugged appletv and imac to it. Everything works flawlessly. i didn't realize my music that is shared would travel through the router.

I think having a wired setup works great.

only took 2mins to download the take 2 software.

Everything i've watched downloads real fast. i'm using comcast right now, which I think is btw 6 - 12 mbps.

Guess i'll keep comcast now.

One thing I love is cbs & nbc have video podcasts of their 6:30pm broadcast. i love that I now can watch the show anytime, and not have to worry about rushing home by 6:30p

Now we just need every show available and I won't need cable. Would love to see some sort of iptv added in future
