Dear friends,
I have just upgraded from my old faithful 8 Max to the new 13 Pro Max.

I am quite lost having lost my physical home button which by now I used without thinking to get to show all my apps, switch through them etc etc.

The new "swipe from bottom" which used to bring up the menu with the torch etc is not swipe from the top.

Safari now has the address bar on the bottom (unlike on my Mac) and I'm not sure as to how quickly go through the open pages etc.

Is there some good person out there with some sort of a guide/tutorial to help me understand the new gestures, hotspots etc and start using my new iPhone in a better way?

TIA

As somebody who went from 6S+ to XS Max. I hear you. It takes 21 days to form new habits if you're using the 13 every day. Just give it time and it'll become normal soon enough. I think you can choose where to put the addy bar back up the top in Safari settings. Also, I'd muck around with the phone and go through every single setting to help get accustomed to it. Just give yourself a few hours to do so. Well worth it.

Thanks, it does make sense :)

a) get used to the new swipes/gestures
b) get used to the nonsensical (they might be great but create a different experience between my iPhone and Mac) redesigns of Safari on iOS
c) get used to the new camera features

21 days? Ok I'll be ready for my birthday :)

I went from a 6S to the X when they released it and it took time to get used to no home button. After using it for awhile I never wanted to use a home button again. It actually made using my iPad a pain because it had the home button but luckily they gave the iPad the same gestures so I rarely even use the home button on it anymore.

Good point. I'm also slowly building confidence with the new gestures.
What I do find annoying though (aside from FaceID NOT working when I wear a face mask) is that after FaceID recognises me, I still have to swipe up to get to the Home Screen.

Especially when I am driving with the phone on a magsafe stand, I'd love it to stay open on the Home Screen as long as my face is there :)

When you’re driving just set the screen to never lock. The thing is plugged in. No worries about power drain.

You seriously wouldn’t want the iPhone going to the Home Screen just by it seeing your face, that would be a privacy and security problem as well as it happening when you didn’t want it to and you wouldn’t be able to read your notifications on the Lock Screen either, you have to have a confirmation of your intent to open the phone as it were.

As for someone who went from a 6s to a X four years ago, it took me no time at all to get used to the gestures and not miss the home button ever again. Sure we’ve had a small speed bump this last year or so with the masks, and FaceID isn’t perfect, but boy is it much nicer when you need it most of the time, plus having an Apple Watch I don’t need to use my pin to unlock my phone while wearing a mask as that will do it for me.

As for a few tips with the gestures, you may be aware now that anywhere right of the notch a swipe down will get you Control Centre. Swiping down anywhere left of that, that is under the notch to the very top left corner of the screen will get you Notification Centre.

Swipe up anywhere from the bottom of the screen and release gets you your home gesture, but if you pause after swiping up you get the app switcher, practice that a few times and it’s actually quicker than double pressing a home button.

A swipe down at the bottom edge of the screen gets you the reachability function that shifts the screen image down to be able to reach things with just your thumb, I don’t use that much but it’s there in a pinch.

For moving from tab to tab in Safari, just swipe the tab left or right. If you don’t like them at the bottom there is an option in Settings/Safari under Tabs, switch it from Tab Bar to Single Tab which moves it back to the top. My thumb still instinctively goes to the top of the screen still.

You also now have tap to wake so you can wake the screen by giving it a tap anywhere on it, and lastly remember when unlocking your phone you do not need to wait for the lock icon to animate that it’s unlocked before swiping up, you can swipe up from the bottom immediately when the screen is on and the phone will go to the Home Screen when it’s done confirming it’s you, so again, don’t wait, just swipe up straight away. I mention that as many when the iPhone X came out thought it was so much slower than TouchID for unlocking because they thought you had to wait till the lock icon had unlocked before swiping.

Thank you so much. Yes I am quickly getting used to these new gestures so slowly I am feeling more confident/automated :)

I have only recently come back to iPhone after about 4 years on Android. Been using gestures for a long time now. Now when I try using a phone or iPad with either a home button or the three buttons on Android phones I find myself always trying to use gestures.
Soon becomes the norm. And (at least with me) the old norm that I knew for many years becomes awkward.

I've been using these gestures since XS Max, and I still swipe down to get to my Control Center, only for the Notification Center to appear.

As far as the other gestures, you'll get used to them quickly. Like @WhiteHawk suggested, play around with the swiping motion from the bottom to find that sweet spot. It'll almost feel like there's an invisible string attached to your finger and you'll get used to where your finger needs to stop for each gesture (like, how far your finger need to travel to close an application as opposed to where it needs to stop to bring up your recent apps).
My first generation 70-year-old parents went from using home buttons to using gestures in no time. Similar to @lionofthesouth, when they're presented with an iPhone with a home button on it, I see them swipe up a couple of times by muscle memory.

The Safari tab bar/single bar option is the first thing I switched when iOS 15 came out.

I hate that too. Basically we are doing two things to unlock.
I came from a 6s to 13 pro. I understand what you mean
