I've just started setting up a new-to-me iPad Pro. And having a little confusion on how to correctly configure (opt-out) of cookies/custom ads under update preferences when first entering the MacRumors website, below:

Agreed it should be straight forward, so apologies for this newbie question.
With ref to the photos below, to opt-out of all, should each be showing blue? Or does the blue toggle indicate the default setting that one agrees to accepting all ads and marketing data (which I don't want)!
Moving the slider over to the left 'allow' side, the toggle changes from blue to grey. Is this the correct position for opting out of ads and marketing data?

On my other Apple devices - MBPro and iMac, I've never used Safari, much preferring FireFox that one can easily tweek for added privacy and/or security via the about:config toolbar.
I'd be interested to hear how many of you use FireFox over Safari on the iPad, especially if you find it advantageous.

Why isn't it blue when the slider is to the left? That is going to cause a lot of confusion for those who want to opt-out of advertisements.

Voila, you're asking the same question that is puzzling me, and perhaps others.

I believe I'm a logically-thinking person and certainly dislike anything ambiguous. If I'd been designing that web page I'd have put an 'allow' indication on the left, and 'opt-out' indication on the right.

So I'm still confused. Any positive advise from other users?

Man I am confused too but I guess we need to clarify two things:

1. First option to the right means setting enabled. Option to the left means setting disabled. Hence blue/gray.
2. Is this opt in or opt out?

I am asking because it totally makes sense for enabled settings to be colored in blue and disbaled to be in gray. What needs to be clarified here is whether it is opt in or opt out. If it is opt in by enabling the setting you allow the ads, if it is opt out by enabling it you disallow the ads.

I'm relieved that I'm not the only one not fully understanding whether opt-out setting is to the left or to the right.

If I was a betting man, I'd say that toggling to the left (greyed-out) was the opt-out setting, and to the right (blue) the default setting to receive ads and marketing data. But I may be wrong - many have lost fortunes whilst rolling a dice, or spinning a roulette wheel........
A sceptic might say that it's been configured ambiguously so that most people would readily accept a default setting of whatever they want you to.
Perhaps there should be a prize for whoever can put our minds at rest. ;)

Where do you see those settings. I am confused as well but I want to check them on my device (if possible) and see if I can come up with something that makes sense.

I did a search with Safari for MacRumors, which gave me the screen as shown in my 1st photo. I then went to the blue 'Update Preferences' tab on lower right corner, (rather than blindly selecting 'Accept All'). Then 'Features' then 'Learn More & Set Preferences' (there are 3). Selecting the 1st, 'Matching Data to Online Sources' gives the screen shown in my other 2 photos.

I guess it's possible that those who have already 'Saved & Continued' with their settings when first visiting the MacRumors website may no longer see the prompt for ads shown on my 1st photo.
Incidently many thanks for your interest in this so far.......

So each vendor is accompanied with either Allow word (which is opt in) or with requires opt out text. This means that enabling the setting means that this is allowed. It is specifically stated that they cannot provide one meaningful message for all vendors as it depends on them and for more details you need to visit the sites themselves. Nevertheless they have marked the vendors that require opt out.

To sum up:

1. For the vendors that do not have the text requires opt-out but Allow you need to specifically give your consent.
2. For the vendors that are marked as opt out you are treated as giving consent by default and you have to specifically opt out. For the opt out option you have to specifically visit the corresponding site.
