Connect 1st Gen Apple Pencil to Ipad Pro 2018?

Obviously the lightning connector on the pencil will not mate with the receptacle on the new Ipad...
So, is there a way to do this?

Obviously, Apple doesn't officially support this. It doesn't seem to be working using an adapter work-around either.

My guess is they either intentionally disabled the Pencil, or they are using different wireless communication.
